Mason Mount’s dad told Chelsea star he would play in FA Cup final 13 years ago

Mason Mount is gearing up for a second consecutive FA Cup final appearance with Chelsea – 13 years after his dad predicted he would play in the showpiece.

The Blues are set to take on Leicester in Saturday's final at Wembley, having seen off Morecambe, Luton, Barnsley, Sheffield United and Manchester City to get there.

And it will represent another special day for Mount, a lifelong Portsmouth fan who was in attendance when Harry Redknapp's side clinched the trophy back in 2008.

The England star watched on with dad Tony as Nwankwo Kanu turned in the winner, sparking jubilant scenes amongst Pompey fans.

And, speaking to the FA ahead of Saturday's final, Mount recalled his dad telling him at the time: “You’ll be out there one day, you’ll be playing there one day.”

Mount Sr's prediction came true last year, but it's fair to say his son's debut FA Cup final appearance did not go to plan.

Frank Lampard's Chelsea were beaten 2-1 by Arsenal on the day, surrendering an early lead after Mount had played a part in teeing up Christian Pulisic for the opener.

“You remember how it feels to lose in a game like that,” he continued.

“When you’ve watched the other team celebrate, then pick up the trophy, you remember those feelings and you don’t want to have them again.”
