Mason Mount proves Graham Potter spot on with actions in Villa defeat

Mason Mount proved Chelsea head coach Graham Potter right with his actions after Saturday’s disastrous 2-0 defeat against Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge. Speculation about Mount’s future at his boyhood club continues to swirl as his contract expiry edges ever closer.

The 24-year-old has been at Chelsea since the age of six, winning the Champions League and being named the fans’ Player of the Season in the last two campaigns.

But with his deal set to expire in 2024, the Blues reportedly plan to cash in on him this summer if he doesn’t agree to an extension before the transfer window.

Mount was an unused substitute in the defeat to Villa, prompting further criticism of Potter, now under severe pressure after his side were booed off by those who stayed until the end.

But that didn’t stop him from doing a lap of Stamford Bridge after full-time to thank the Chelsea supporters for their support during a dismal evening.

He was said to be the only Blues star to acknowledge all four stands after the game, emphasising his love for the club amid his uncertain future.

Mount proved Potter spot on by showing the gesture after his head coach hailed his attitude in the build-up to the Villa game.

On Friday, Potter said: “It’s been tough for him. How he’s acted has been top. He’s had niggling injuries and noise and speculation.

“He’s a professional, a top professional and a good lad. Sometimes in your career, things aren’t optimal, and you have to act well, and that’s exactly what he’s done.”

The England international’s role has been limited since talk of a potential Chelsea exit intensified, starting just one of the club’s last eight games.

Potter suggested he could be ready to feature from the bench but didn’t call on him as Chelsea chased a goal against Unai Emery’s side.

Mount has struggled for form since Chelsea sacked Thomas Tuchel, failing to score in 2023.

Nineteen of his 33 senior goals for the club came in 86 games under Tuchel, which has contributed to murmurs of a potential Bayern Munich move.
