Mason Holgate sent off for high tackle in Everton vs Spurs only after VAR check
Everton defender Mason Holgate was sent off for a high tackle on Tottenham's Pierre Hojbjerg – but only after VAR intervened.
Holgate didn't start the Premier League clash against Spurs and was only brought on by Toffees manager Rafa Benitez in the 82nd minute of the match.
Barely eight minutes after his introduction he flew into a challenge on the back of Hojbjerg's legs, which was initially deemed to be just a yellow card worthy offence by referee Chris Kavanagh.
But Kavanagh was then encouraged to review his decision at the pitchside monitor, after which he upgraded the booking to a red card.
The sending off added further to a game packed with punishments but lacking in goals.
A staggering six yellow cards were handed out throughout the match with Tottenham receiving four of them and Everton two.
And another Toffees defender, Ben Godfrey, could also have potentially seen red for a stamp on Son Henug-min.
Holgate, who joined the club from Barnsley in 2015, has grown a reputation for being prone to picking up a booking.

This was his first ever red card, but over the years he has earned many yellows.
When on loan with West Brom in the 2018/19 season he picked up six in 21 appearances for the Championship side.
After returning to Everton he got a further five more in the 27 appearances he made in the next campaign.
And then last season was his worst to date. He saw yellow nine times, which was the joint fifth most in the Premier League. Incidentally, he was tied on that amount with Hojbjerg.
Holgate will now miss Everton's next three matches against Manchester City, Brentford and Merseyside rivals Liverpool.
The 0-0 draw left them in 11th place in the league table with 15 points.
Meanwhile, Tottenham remained two spots above their opponents with a point more.
