Mason Greenwood reacts to breaking Wayne Rooney record & hails Man Utd team-mate
Mason Greenwood says he will be doing everything in his power to strengthen his position in the record books after overtaking Wayne Rooney to become Manchester United’s top teenage goalscorer in Premier League history.
Bertrand Traore opened the scoring with a thunderbolt as United started poorly at Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon but a flurry of second-half goals from Bruno Fernandes, Greenwood and Edinson Cavani secured the visitors a 3-1 victory and all three points.
The result extended the Red Devils’ unbeaten streak away from home to 25 games in the English top flight and ensured Manchester City’s title celebrations must be put on hold for the time being.
Greenwood has been in outstanding form for United in recent matches and took his personal tally for the season to 11 in all competitions with a clinical turn and finish in the 56th minute at Villa Park.
Club legend Rooney had been United’s previous highest-scoring teenager with 15 goals but that record now belongs to Greenwood, who has netted 16 times since his league debut back in 2018.
Reflecting on his strike at Villa, the 19-year-old told MUTV: ‘It was a good goal.
‘I just knew that he [Tyrone Mings] was coming tight to you in the box, so if you get a little movement then you can get half a yard. I finished it well, I’m happy with my goal today.
‘Hopefully there are many more to come. I’ll try and keep scoring goals so no one else can come and break the record in the future! I’m happy scoring goals.’
It was the 10th time this season that United have managed to salvage a result after coming from behind and Greenwood admits the team have a ‘bad habit’ of starting slowly.
‘We’ve got a little bit of a bad habit,
‘ he added.
‘It’s not so bad if we come and get the three points; it’s just a wake up call when they score.
‘We know we can come back second half and get the three points. We need to work on it and not give little goals away in the first half so we don’t have to come back from behind.
‘We were always confident that we’d get the three points. That first goal was good play from Paul to get the penalty. We always knew Bruno would put it in the back of the net. It was a confidence booster. From there, we looked comfortable and got the three points.’
Greenwood is relishing the opportunity to learn from Cavani, who scored his 15th goal in United colours this weekend.
‘It was exactly the same as against Roma,
‘ Greenwood said when reflecting on the Uruguayan’s late header at Villa Park.
‘You always know what he’s going to do but you still can’t seem to stop him.
‘It’s nice to watch him off the bench.
‘It’s the movement, everyone knows he can do it but it still seems they’re not able to stop him.
‘We’re all learning off him, me, [Marcus] Rashy, Amad [Diallo]… we’re all looking up to him.
