Mason Greenwood future – Man Utd stance on transfer and Ten Hag view on star

Premier League season preview: Man Utd

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood’s future remains up in the air as the club decide their next move, with an official announcement set to be made to determine the outcome of its internal investigation. Greenwood is free to return to playing football after the Crown Prosecution Service dropped their charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm against him in February. With club officials poised to make an announcement before their Premier League opener against Wolves, Express Sport gives you a detailed insight into the current situation regarding Greenwoood’s future.

Manchester United’s stance

United have reportedly decided against releasing or selling Mason Greenwood after entering the final phase of talks over the forward’s future.

A report from The Sun claims that Greenwood has been stepping up his efforts in training with a view to returning, which would bring an end to speculation that the 21-year-old could be released from his contract. Greenwood is expected to remain a United player after receiving support from Erik ten Hag and the United dressing room.

All that is left to be determine is whether he links up with the Dutchman’s squad for the forthcoming season, or if he is shipped off on loan to regain match fitness after spending 18 months on the sidelines. His last appearance came against West Ham back in January 2022.

The report includes a source claiming that Greenwood has been working ‘harder than ever’ after being spotted practising his shooting in front of his father, coach and newborn daughter this week.

Ten Hag keeping tabs

Erik ten Hag has been receiving data on Greenwood’s training sessions after delegating a coach to keep track of his training sessions, according to reports.

United are due to communicate their decision on Greenwood’s future after a six-month internal investigation before the start of the season, with the Red Devils facing Wolves on August 14.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United have been collecting data from Greenwood’s sessions to assess his capability ahead of his potential return to football.

The forward has been spotted training in public parks as he works his way back to action, and those sessions have been overseen by a former United junior coach, who has also worked with United youngsters Kobbie Mainoo and Daniel Gore.

Greenwood’s preference emerges

United could decide to send Greenwood out on loan to help him re-integrate into professional football, and the striker would favour a move within England in that scenario.

Reports suggest he is ‘reluctant to relocate’ after he became a father for the first time last month. Italian clubs AC Milan and Atalanta have expressed their interest in signing the one-time England international, while reports of a move to Turkey surfaced shortly after the charges were dropped.

It remains to be seen whether Greenwood would get his wish to stay in the UK, given that there is yet to be any indication from English sides that they would consider a loan move for the striker.

But with his record of 35 goals in 129 appearances, it could be that clubs are simply waiting for the official announcement from United before making their interest known.
