Martinez doesnt care about criticism as 5ft 9in CB wins over Man Utd fans

Manchester United defender Lisandro Martinez admits he “doesn’t care” about the constant criticism and attention his height receives.

The Argentines was signed by Erik ten Hag from Ajax in an enormous deal believed to be worth around £57million. He was subject to intense scrutiny and ridicule after he was substituted at half-time in United’s 4-0 away loss to Brentford in August.

However, he has managed to form an impressive partnership with Raphael Varane that has been the bed rock of four consecutive Premier League victories for the Red Devils. And when pushed about the criticism he receives, Martinez explained that he gives very little credence to the comments.

“I don't care about criticism,” Martinez said to TyC sports, via the Daily Mail. “I believe in myself and I trust my abilities.

“I always worked hard. That's what will make me have the results I want.

“To be honest, it was a dream come true to play for a huge club like Manchester United, especially to play in the Premier League, which is one of the best leagues in the world. I am really happy.” One of his fiercest critics was Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

Carragher specifically earmarked the decision to sign Martinez as a particularly huge transfer mistake on the Red Devils’ part. And Carragher was still adamant about his feelings towards Martinez, despite his and United’s recent good form.

"I think he's a good player [but] I wouldn't want a centre back who's 5ft 9in in my team," Carragher replied when talking about Martinez's performance after United's 3-1 victory over Arsenal. "He's only had four games let's not be getting carried away."

"If Odegaard scores that open goal we'd be saying he made a mistake. For a defender to be 5ft 9in to play in the Premier League he's got to be a good player. I wouldn't want to play alongside someone who was a 5ft 9in centre back."
