Manchester United duo Lisandro Martinez and Scott McTominay were two players who ‘aired their views’ in a fiery inquest following the club’s 6-3 defeat to Manchester City last weekend. The Red Devils were easily beaten by their fierce rivals at the Etihad, with Phil Foden and Erling Haaland both netting hat-tricks. And it appears players in the away dressing room were far from happy after the showdown…
Manchester United had no answer for City as the hosts ran riot, with Pep Guardiola seeing Foden and Haaland rise to the fore and put Erik ten Hag’s team to the sword.
And, after the game, the Red Devils dressing room was a heated place to be.
According to The Sun, Martinez and McTominay were ‘the more vocal players’ as United squad members dissected the defeat following Ten Hag’s promise of an inquest.
It’s claimed some tempers ‘boiled over’ during the ‘frank and heated’ discussions, with a source quoted as saying: “Ten Hag asked each player one-by-one to explain their mistakes to one another.
“Some players were blaming others for not covering, which led to full blown arguments.
“One player told another to ‘concentrate on your own (expletive) game’.
Man Utd transfers: Plans for next three signings are damning on Solskjaer
“It all got smoothed over but tensions are high. Ten Hag actively encouraged it.
“He’s told them he wants to see that level of passion on the field, not after the game has been put to bed.”
And they also added: “Erik wants them to get angry. It was frank and heated and that’s what he wants to see.
“You’d be surprised if he didn’t encourage it. He wants them to have that fighting spirit.”
United players struggled to bounce back from difficult defeats last season, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick ruled the roost.
But, on Thursday night, Ten Hag got a response from his squad as they battled their way to a 3-2 win over Omonia in the Europa League.

Now, United will be hoping to show they’re over the City debacle by beating Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon.
They lost the same fixture last term, with Anthony Gordon netting the winner in a 1-0 victory that was secured back in April.
But United will go into the game as favourites, especially with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial starting to look a deadly double act up top.
Another piece of information that has emerged, meanwhile, concerns a holiday for Harry Maguire.
The England international is injured at present and was recently allowed to jet off to Portugal, despite Ten Hag previously wanting his players to stick together as a group.

And squad members aren’t happy with Ten Hag for breaking his own rules when it comes to the 29-year-old.
“Erik has high standards for everyone to abide by. He expects all injured players to remain with the group,” stated an insider.
“He believes they should function as one unit – injured or not.
“But in Harry’s case he felt there were exceptional circumstances. He wanted him to have a mental break from the pressure he’s under.
“He went away with his family and Erik hopes that will put him in a better place to recover from injury and rediscover his form.

“But it’s not a good look when the club captain is missing from the plane to Cyprus – and is instead allowed to go and play golf in Portugal.”
A United spokesperson, however, has insisted Maguire needs the trip in order to quicken his return to action.
“Harry was given permission to travel to Portugal to continue his rehabilitation while the rest of the squad was in Cyprus, allowing him to benefit from the same warm weather conditions,” they’re quoted as saying.
“Harry was accompanied by a MU physio and has been working hard on his recovery.
“He is due back at Carrington on Sunday.”
