Arsenal star Martin Odegaard was at the heart of the Gunner’s commanding 3-1 victory over Tottenham in the north London derby on Sunday. But it’s now emerged that the Norwegian midfielder played a significant role off the pitch as well as on it last Sunday.

Arsenal new boy Takehiro Tomiyasu has settled into life at the Emirates well so far.

The Japanese right-back arrived in north London on deadline day in a reported £19.8million deal from Italian side Bologna.

Since Tomiyasu’s arrival, the Gunners have racked up three consecutive wins – conceding just one goal in the process, with Sunday’s 3-1 victory over Spurs lifting them above their London rivals and into the top half of the Premier League table.

The Japanese full-back delivered an exceptional performance against the Gunners.

And Tomiyasu has revealed the words of encouragement from Odegaard that helped him cope with being thrust straight into a struggling Arsenal side not long after arriving in England.

“Ever since I arrived, every single player has helped me a lot here, and every member of staff as well,” the Japanese international told Arsenal’s matchday programme before the win against Tottenham.

DON’T MISS

“Before that game against Norwich, I have to say I was really nervous. So I really appreciated the help from all the players, especially Martin Odegaard.

“He told me that you just have to enjoy this time, really enjoy it and that’s what I was able to do. It helped that we were able to take the three points as well.”

Odegaard’s performance at the Emirates was the catalyst for Arsenal’s first half attacking blitz as they blew Tottenham away.

The Norwegian star was influential in the build-up play for the opening two goals in particular, as he pulled the strings against a hapless Spurs midfield.

It’s not the first time that Odegaard’s leadership qualities have been given a glowing recommendation from people within the club.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta highlighted Odegaard’s role as a leader in the Arsenal squad previously.

“Well, he’s showing that I think from week one,” the Spaniard said when discussing the 22-year-old.

“The way he steps on the pitch, he always wants the ball, the way he commands the pressing. He’s been really influential.

“I think we’ve all been a bit surprised because he looks really shy and humble, but when he steps on that pitch he’s a real character and he loves to play football.”
