Marko Arnautovic turned down Man United – NOT the other way around

Marko Arnautovic turned down Man United – NOT the other way around, his agent claims… as he insists the club continued talks over a deal for the Bologna forward despite fan backlash over racism claims against him

  • Marko Arnautovic turned down a move to Manchester United, his agent claims
  • United saw the Austrian as a cut-price option to provide more attacking options
  • It was previously reported that United refused to meet Bologna’s £7.5m demands
  • But his agent Tiziano Pasquali has denied claims that the Red Devils pulled out

Marko Arnautovic’s agent has claimed the Austrian striker was the one to turn down a move to Manchester United this summer, rather than the club terminating any possible deal.

United saw Arnautovic as a cut-price option to bolster their attack. It was previously reported that they decided not to meet Bologna’s demands due to fan unrest and after having an initial £7.5million bid rejected.

The former Stoke City and West Ham United forward’s agent Tiziano Pasquali has however denied those claims, instead insisting United continued talks beyond speculation of ending their interest.

His agent has denied claims that United pulled out of the deal after some negative comments

‘Yes, Juventus and Manchester United had come forward,’ Pasquali told Gianluca di Marzio when asked about the transfer rumours.

‘From the English we had received a written proposal, and the negotiations had continued even after some contrary opinions from their fans.

‘But in the end, it was Marko who chose not to drag it out too long and to stay at Bologna. How can you think that he is now in a bad way?’

It had previously been reported that the decision to pull out was influenced by the negative reaction from supporters, who were dismayed to see United pursuing a 33-year-old who played in China after leaving the Premier League three years ago.

Arnautovic has also had disciplinary problems, including being hit by a one-match ban from UEFA at Euro 2020 last summer for aiming an anti-Albanian slur at North Macedonia player Ezgjan Alioski.

The striker, who played under Ten Hag and his United No 2 Steve McClaren at FC Twente 12 years ago, later denied he was a racist.

Arnautovic has been instrumental for Bologna in the Serie A so far this campaign, having notched six goals in their opening nine fixtures – making him the joint top goalscorer in the league alongside Lazio forward Ciro Immobile.
