Marcus Rashford’s ‘shot on target’ was not ruled as one – leaving punters fuming

Marcus Rashford was not awarded a shot on target against Bayern Munich to leave punters fuming – because it went down as a cross.

The Manchester United forward cut inside onto his right foot during the 18th minute of the Champions League fixture and struck the ball into the grasp of Sven Ulreich. However, fans were left shocked after their accumulators including a Rashford shot on target went down as losers, because of Opta's assessment.

The Opta definition for a shot on target reads: "A deliberate attempt to score that is on target. Includes all goals being scored and shots on target saved by the goalkeeper. It also includes shots on target that are blocked by a last line defending player, preventing the ball from entering the Goal."

The definition of a cross is as follows: "A ball played from a wide position targeting a team-mate(s) in a central area within proximity to the goal."

As well as questions regarding Rashford's intention, it appears as though the ball might well have been heading wide as Ulreich stepped off his line to claim it.

Bet365, who settle bets based on Opta, wrote on Twitter: "Bets on Marcus Rashford – shots on target are settled correctly as lost as he was not deemed to have a shot on target during the game.

"Rashford had a cross at 17 minutes, this was not deemed a shot on target."

Eagle-eyed fans, however, spotted that Rashford used his iconic shooting technique rather than a usual pass, with Opta stating that all match footage is reviewed several times.

Others are crying out to see a new angle to better show if the effort would've been heading in, which would made the argument more straightforward.

One fuming punter had told their choice of bookie: "Marcus Rashford got a shot on target in first half – clearly not a cross as cuts in and strikes it at the keeper! Can you settle this correctly please."

A second asked: "Can you correct my Marcus Rashford shot on target please?"

A third posted: "I’d like to make a complaint, how is this not a shot on target by Marcus Rashford?"
