Marcus Rashford said he was "hacked" after appearing to confirm Manchester United's signing of Jadon Sancho on Twitter.
A United fan tweeted Rashford shortly after England's Euro 2020 win over Germany, begging the striker to "announce Sancho".
Rashford – who along with Sancho had been an unused sub for the last-16 clash – replied 13 minutes later with a simple "Yes x".
The Three Lions star's unexpected reply naturally sent Twitter into meltdown, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side believed to be on the verge of completing a deal for the Borussia Dortmund winger.
United have chased Sancho for over a year, and are set to sign him for around £73m plus add-ons, having refused to pay Dortmund's £108m price tag last summer.
But Rashford was back on Twitter on Wednesday morning to tell fans his account had been hacked.
"A little hack and I’m back. Morning all," he tweeted, along with a heart emoji and an England flag.
That didn't stop United fans having some fun in the meantime.
After Rashford had seemingly replied, one supporter posted: "Crying, is this how we're announcing the Sancho deal?"
Another tweeted: "No way after 2 years of waiting this is how it's announced LOOOOOOOOL."
And a third replied: "I love how he hasn’t deleted it."
And another United fan account referenced transfer watcher Fabrizio Romano's much-used catchphrase, tweeting: "Who needs a 'Here we go' when we can get a 'Yes x'."
And the fan who had asked the question in the first place later wrote: "I’ve literally dedicated hours over the last 2 years to this Sancho -> United deal on instagram, Twitter, podcasts, making graphics etc, etc and it ended like this!? Unbelievable. Thanks for the reply, Marcus x"
A Manchester City fan hoped to get in on the act by asking England goalscorer Raheem Sterling to confirm Jack Grealish's expected move to the Etihad.
She tweeted: "This one will be deleted in a hot second. Top man. Can you announce Grealish to City as well @sterling7, while you're both in the mood?"
Sancho is expected to join United on a five-year deal worth a staggering £350,000-a-week.
