Marcos Alonso will not join Manchester United this summer after turning down a two-year deal and intends to remain at Barcelona instead.
The 32-year-old emerged as a potential candidate to fill the void left by Luke Shaw, who suffered a muscle injury which is expected to keep him out for a number of months.
According to Spanish outlet Marca, United approached Barcelona last week to sign the defender on loan for this season.
The Red Devils offered Alonso a two-year deal, which would have seen him remain at Old Trafford after his current contract with Barcelona expires at the end of the season.
But the former Chelsea left-back turned down the chance to return to the Premier League and is instead determined to see out the final year of his deal with the Blaugrana.

While Alejandro Balde is firmly the first choice left-back at the Nou Camp, Alonso is happy to fight for his place after Jordi Alba left for Inter Miami.
Alonso made 179 Premier League appearances with Bolton, Sunderland and Chelsea, winning the title with the Blues in 2017.
The Spaniard lifted five more major trophies during his six seasons at Stamford Bridge, winning the FA Cup in 2018 and the Europa League the following season.
In 2021, Alonso was part of the team that won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup.
The Spaniard’s successor at Stamford Bridge, Marc Cuccurella, is also on United’s radar as are Tottenham’s Sergio Reguilon and Brentford’s Rico Henry.
On Monday, Mail Sport reported United had made initial checks into Henry’s situation and potential availability.
The 26-year-old has been a consistent and impressive performer for Brentford since joining from Walsall in 2016.
He missed just one Premier League game last season and has started all three of Brentford’s games so far this term.
Erik Ten Hag is on the market for a new left-back following injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrrel Malacia, who both face months on the sidelines
Shaw played United’s first two games of the season but could be out until November
Luring Henry out of Brentford this late in the window would not be straightforward however and it is understood they maybe more open to considering his departure at the end of the season.
Henry also would not come cheap and he is contracted to Brentford until at least 2026.
Shaw’s replacement Tyrell Malacia is also sidelined for the next couple of months, leaving Erik Ten Hag’s short of options at left-back.
Diogo Dalot filled in for Shaw against Nottingham Forest on Saturday, with 20-year-old Alvaro Fernandez currently the only left-back in Ten Hag’s squad.
