Marcel Sabitzer is free to take his dream Man Utd shirt number at Man Utd

Incoming Manchester United signing Marcel Sabitzer could pick his favourite shirt number – if he is brave enough.

After losing midfield maestro Christian Eriksen to injury, Erik ten Hag’s side appear to have responded by signing the Bayern Munich ace. Sabitzer will reportedly arrive at Old Trafford on loan, but there could be an option to make the move permanent in the summer.

The Austrian is an adaptable and versatile playmaker who has experience playing behind the striker and in a deeper, box-to-box role. If he is to join the Red Devils, he will be in a position to pick the club's iconic No.7 shirt.

Sabitzer proudly wore the No.7 during his seven year stint at RB Leipzig. At United, the number has been available ever since Cristiano Ronaldo left the club.

Ironically, United fans began citing conspiracy theories claiming the number has been cursed ever since Ronaldo first left the club for Real Madrid in 2009. The likes of Michael Owen, Memphis Depay, Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez, and Ronaldo himself all struggled with the weight of the number.

If he is ambitious, Sabitzer will grab the shirt with both hands. However, the playmaker may also decide it is an unnecessary pressure to take on, particularly with the move currently set to last until the end of the season.

His performances at United will likely play a role in his next permanent move. If he performs well, he may be able to choose between staying at Bayern or joining United permanently.

If things do not go well, United may turn their nose up at the Austrian and Julian Nagelsmann’s side may leave him on the bench. Either way, it could prove to be an important decision for Sabitzer to make.

Sabitzer has contributed one goal and one assist in 23 appearances in all competitions for the Bavarians. He will join a United side currently fourth in the Premier League and 11 points behind table topping Arsenal.
