Manchester United aren’t in the race to sign Arthur Melo from Juventus, it has been claimed. The Brazil international is currently a top transfer target for Arsenal. However, despite Donny van de Beek being primed to leave Old Trafford on loan, Ralf Rangnick’s side aren’t involved in any pursuit.

United thought they were onto a winner when they signed Van de Beek from Ajax back in the summer transfer window of 2020.

However, the Netherlands international has spent the majority of his time in English football stuck on the bench.

Now, Van de Beek is set to leave United behind.

Crystal Palace are the frontrunners to land the Dutchman, with Express Sport understanding United and the Eagles have already agreed terms.

However, Everton are also in the mix with incoming boss Frank Lampard eager to hijack a deal ahead of his official appointment.

With United set to lose Van de Beek, they’ve been linked with a move for Arthur before Monday’s transfer deadline.

Arsenal are the frontrunners to land the Brazilian, even if their current attempts to land the player have hit a wall.

And Fabrizio Romano has given the Gunners a boost by saying Arthur isn’t a target for United on his Twitter account.

Whether Arsenal are now able to complete a deal remains to be seen.

Mikel Arteta knows his side require more reinforcements if they’re to qualify for the Champions League, with the club’s midfield a worry.

Thomas Partey has struggled for form for the north London giants ever since his arrival from Atletico Madrid roughly 18 months ago.

And Granit Xhaka’s lack of discipline continues to be a curse, with the Switzerland international still far too erratic for Arteta’s liking.

United, meanwhile, aren’t expected to sign anybody before Monday night.

Ruben Neves is admired but Wolves have slapped a £40million price tag on their prized asset, with the Portugal international happy to stay until the summer.

United’s main target is West Ham’s Declan Rice, however.

Yet his signing will be tricky with the Hammers wanting a fee in the region of £100m to part ways with the England international.

Meanwhile, former United star Dimitar Berbatov has opened up on Van de Beek.

And he’s urged the midfielder, as well as Jesse Lingard, to follow in Anthony Martial’s footsteps by leaving the club this month.

Martial has joined Sevilla on loan, with the Spanish giants hoping he can help them overtake Real Madrid in the race for the La Liga title.

And Berbatov said: “I’m sad to see Anthony Martial leave United, but in a way I’m happy for him because he needed to go and he needs to play more minutes.

“Hopefully he will get that with Sevilla and he can show his full arsenal of quality in the Spanish league.

“Jesse Lingard also needs to go and find more game time.

“I was surprised that he didn’t stay at West Ham and they didn’t find a solution because he did so well there and I don’t know why he’s choosing to stay at United if he’s not going to play.

“If United aren’t going to play him then I don’t understand why there are any problems with him leaving the club.

“He’s still under 30, so he has enough time to play and enjoy football but just sitting on the bench at United, it’s obvious he isn’t going to play, I cannot accept that.

“Any move that gives Donny van de Beek the opportunity to play is a good move for him.

“It’s not working out for the Dutchman at United and it doesn’t matter who the manager is, he’s constantly on the bench, and not playing enough minutes to get into shape and form.

“It’s best for him to follow Anthony Martial and leave the club to go and play elsewhere.

“He never established himself as a first choice player, which is a shame because he produced great performances for Ajax.

“He should go on a permanent move and try to get back into the form that he was in before.”
