It’s only been a week since they last played, but we’ve already got another derby between Manchester United and Liverpool – this time in the FA Cup.
Their last meeting wasn’t exactly a classic as the two sides played out a 0-0 stalemate at Anfield on Sunday in a game where both sets of teams were criticised for showing a lack of ambition. The result certainly suited United more – with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men topping the Premier League table after being rejuvenated under the Norwegian.
But Liverpool’s fortunes couldn’t differ more. Jurgen Klopp’s men haven’t won since a 7-0 win at Crystal Palace last month and have scored just once in their five games that have followed.
The reigning league champions will be hoping this game serves as a springboard for their season after they suffered their first loss at Anfield since 2017 against Burnley in midweek.

So a handful of changes for United. Dean Henderson in for David de Gea, Lindelof comes in for Eric Bailly and Donny van de Beek is given a chance to impress in midfield alongside Paul Pogba. Edinson Cavani keeps his place up top after scoring against Fulham in midweek. He’ll be supported by Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford. McTominay starts instead of Bruno Fernandes, who is on the bench for this one.
For Liverpool, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino are back in the starting XI, with Sadio Mane on the bench. Curtis Jones is given the nod and Rhys Williams plays in central defence alongside Fabinho with Joel Matip still not fit to play.
Another week, another derby between Manchester United and Liverpool. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Jurgen Klopp face off against each other yet again in the FA Cup fourth round, but let’s hope it’s a more inspiring contest than what we got last Sunday.
The teams could only produce a 0-0 stalemate last time out in a drab affair that saw United go away happy as the table toppers. For Liverpool, it was a missed opportunity to show they mean business in the title race, and lost further ground on their rivals in midweek after a dismal defeat to Burnley at Anfield – their first at home since 2017.
The Reds will be hoping to push the reset button here and overturn their winless run that stretches back five games, and what an opportunity to do it at Old Trafford.
