Manchester United vs AC Milan prediction: How will Europa League fixture play out tonight?

Manchester United face a tough test in the Europa League round of 16 tonight as they contest a first leg with AC Milan at Old Trafford.

European giants United and Milan both have a rich history of success and memorable ties in European competitions and will be hoping for more of the same this week.

The Red Devils cruised past Real Sociedad to reach this stage of the competition, while Italian side Milan beat Red Star Belgrade on away goals last month.

EXPLAINED: The reasons behind Man United’s structural revamp

United won the Manchester derby on Sunday and are still in the top-four running in the Premier League, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will need a trophy to vindicate the good work he has done in turning things round at Old Trafford.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has inspired a title challenge for Milan against their city rivals Inter, but the Rossoneri will be without the striker for the first leg of this tie.

What is the team news?

There are several injury issues for Manchester United, with Marcus Rashford already ruled out and fellow forward Edison Cavani aggravating an injury in training last week. Donny van de Beek, Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Phil Jones are also expected to miss out.

First-choice goalkeeper David de Gea is thought to still be in Spain following the birth of his child, which would give Dean Henderson a chance to start. Henderson played in both legs against Real Sociedad and also in Premier League ties with Crystal Palace and City, keeping clean sheets on all occasions.

Milan also have some injuries, with Ibrahimovic and Ismael Bennacer still out, and Hakan Calhanoglu, Ante Rebic and Theo Hernandez all doubts and unlikely to play at Old Trafford. Milan boss Stefano Pioli has recently given rests to the central-defensive duo Simon Kjaer and Alessandro Romagnoli, with Chelsea loanee Fikayo Tomori an option to replace either if needed.

Predicted line-ups

Man United: Henderson, Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Shaw, Fred, McTominay, Greenwood, Fernandes, James, Cavani

AC Milan: Donnarumma, Calabria, Kjaer, Romagnoli, Dalot, Tonali, Kessie, Saelemaekers, Diaz, Castillejo, Leao

Odds

Man United: 17/2

Draw: 4/1

AC Milan: 4/9

Prediction

With United full of confidence off the back of their Manchester derby victory, they will fancy their chances. However, the side’s inconsistency may catch them out against Milan, who hope to take something away from Old Trafford. Man United 1-0 AC Milan
