Manchester United’s pursuit of Real Madrid star Raphael Varane could move quickly in the coming days, according to reports. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has already snapped up Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton in this summer’s transfer window. But more reinforcements are being eyed as they look to win the Premier League title next time out.

Manchester United have long admired Varane.

Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign the centre-back from Lens a decade ago, only for Real Madrid to intervene and entice him into a move to Spain instead.

Jose Mourinho also wanted Varane during his time in charge at Old Trafford but, with Varane vital for Los Blancos, that was never going to happen.

Now, however, Solskjaer is keen to succeed where his predecessors failed.

And Sunday World claim a potential deal for Varane could move quickly in the ‘coming days’, with the club increasingly hopeful an agreement could be struck.

As things stand, they’re yet to agree a fee with Real Madrid.

But the player himself is willing to move to Manchester and agreeing personal terms won’t be an issue, amid separate reports they’re close to being wrapped up.

Paris Saint-Germain are also in talks with Varane’s camp over a possible deal.

However, having already snapped up Sergio Ramos and given him a big salary, whether they have the financial might to sign another marquee defender remains to be seen.

Should United sign Varane, he’d then be deployed alongside Harry Maguire at the back next term.

And that would likely see Victor Lindelof drop to the bench, despite the Sweden international impressing at Euro 2020 during his side’s run in the tournament.

Varane isn’t expected to be the last player the club target this summer, either.

Solskjaer also feels additions are required at right-back and midfield if he’s to win the Premier League title next time out, a prize that’s evaded them ever since Ferguson’s time at the helm.

For the former area, Kieran Trippier remains of interest.

However, Atletico Madrid are determined to get £40million for the England star – and the Red Devils are unwilling to pay that at the current moment in time.

In midfield, the likes of Declan Rice and Eduardo Camavinga are both admired.

And it seems like the Glazers are making true of their promise to back Solskjaer, with Joel Glazer saying last month: “Our goal is to win every competition we compete in, and we will continue to invest in our Academy and in the transfer market to support the manager in an effort to meet the club’s goals.

“As a club we have devoted a lot of time and resources over the last several years updating and further developing our vast global scouting network to adapt to the modern football environment.

“This is a project that should provide a foundation for long-term success in the years to come.

“In addition, as you all know, we have also been focused on growing and developing our women’s team in line with the traditions and values of the club, and we are committed to continuing that process.”

And he then added: “It [debt and dividend payments] has never stood in the way of us pursuing players or transfers on the pitch.

“We may have walked away from transfers at times because the other side wanted an outlandish number. And while it’s easy to pay it that one time, it does have consequences.

“You do it once and the next person expects it, and then the next person expects it. And that’s not good, ultimately, for the club. So, we think that we’re able to accomplish all these things and still have.

“We’re going to keep investing on the pitch, which we did last year, and we plan on doing it meaningfully this year. So, we feel that we’re in a good spot.”
