Manchester United star Marcus Rashford has congratulated Mason Greenwood after the youngster signed a new Old Trafford contract. The 19-year-old will now be at the club until 2025. And despite misfiring in the Premier League this term, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is hopeful he’ll realise his full potential.

United announced Greenwood had signed a new contract early on Tuesday morning, saying in a statement: “Manchester United is delighted to announce that Mason Greenwood has signed a new contract which will keep him at the club until June 2025, with the option to extend for a further year.

“Greenwood is a product of the club’s famed Academy and has been at Manchester United since the age of seven.

“The 19-year-old, who is United’s youngest-ever goalscorer in European competition, has already made 82 appearances for the club. Greenwood is one of nine Academy graduates who have featured in a first-team matchday squad this season.”

Solskjaer hailed the move by saying: “Mason is a fantastic talent and yet another fine example of the type of player that our Academy produces.

“He has made great progress this season, showing real maturity and adaptability to his game, which has seen him develop into one of the best young players in the country.

“Whilst it is easy for people outside of the club to forget that Mason is just 19, it is our job as coaches to ensure he reaches his phenomenal potential and every step we take is to help him along that path.

“Mason is naturally gifted and has a brilliant attitude; we know how important he is going to be for Manchester United over the coming seasons.”

And Rashford has now reacted.

The United star took to social media to say: “Congrats bro @masongreenwood.”

Now, the onus will be on the Red Devils to get the best from their talented teenager.

Greenwood has scored just one Premier League goal this season and, on Sunday, was unable to propel his side to victory against West Brom.

But the Red Devils appear sold on the youngster and will hope he can bounce back and rediscover his mojo sooner, rather than later.

Greenwood himself has vowed to repay United’s faith, saying: “When you join the club at seven years old, you just dream of playing for the first-team one day.

“I’ve worked so hard to reach this level and the last two years have been amazing.

“There is so much that I want to achieve in the game and I know that this is the perfect environment to play my football.

“With the support from the manager, his coaching staff and so many great players to learn from; I know that I am developing every single day.

“There is a lot more to come from myself and this team and I am so committed to working hard week in, week out to help the group achieve success.

“I want to repay the club for the support that everyone has given me over the years and show everyone just what I am capable of.”

In a separate interview posted on United’s official website, he added: “Obviously, I’m very happy.

“I’ve been here since the age of seven, you know, so to sign another contract, it’s like I say, every single one is a dream come true.

“I always want to be here. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be in the first-team and stay as long as possible really, win trophies and do the best I can here.”

He then added: “Yeah, obviously it shows the faith and I think they’ve been impressed at the end of last season.

“I’ll do my best to get up to those standards again this season.

“Obviously learning off the likes of Edi [Edinson Cavani], who has come into the team and been very important, so I’m watching him every single day and listening to Kieran [McKenna] and Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and all the coaching staff.”
