Edinson Cavani has refused to rule out playing for Boca Juniors in the future after revealing that he was close to joining the Argentine club before agreeing to remain at Manchester United. This week, Man Utd exercised the one-year extension clause that was inserted into Cavani’s deal when he joined Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side last summer.

The 34-year-old has impressed since arriving on a free transfer following his release by Paris Saint-Germain.

He has scored 15 times in all competitions, including four across the two recent Europa League semi-final legs against Roma. An incredible 8-5 aggregate scoreline set up a final against Villarreal on May 26.

Nine Premier League goals appear set to help his side to their highest top-flight finish since 2017. The Red Devils are second behind rivals Manchester City, whose third title in four years was confirmed after United were beaten 2-1 by Leicester City on Tuesday.

Leicester and Chelsea catching United’s 70 points is still plausible – they are four and six points behind, respectively – but Solskjaer’s side have a game in hand over both. Beat Liverpool tonight and they will all but guarantee their place as runners-up.

United have tied down Cavani for next season as they aim to go one better by winning a first Premier League title since 2013.

However, Cavani has revealed that he nearly chose to join Boca.

The Uruguay international admits he has held talks with the club’s vice-president, the former Argentina midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme, and says a deal was close to happening.

“The possibility I was going to sign for them (Boca) was real, but I was always clear. What has been said and printed is half true, half lies. Sometimes it’s like that. But the chance was real,” Cavani told 2 de Punta.

“Has the door with Boca been left open? You’d need to ask Boca if the door is open.

“Today the reality is what it is. I’m at Manchester United and I’m fully focused.

“There are moments when you need to be near your roots and your loved ones. There’s not a year goes by when I don’t think about it, but the decision is a mixture of things, the affection of the people, the attitude of the club with me and my family, my team-mates asking me to stay, the manager.”

Cavani’s new contract was announced by United on Monday.

His likely departure in June 2022 gives the Old Trafford outfit a year to plan a swoop for a long-term striker. Erling Haaland’s reported £64.5 million release clause becomes active next summer.

Harry Kane will enter the final two years of his contract at Tottenham, making a deal for the England captain easier.
