Manchester United stance on Edin Dzeko deadline day transfer – EXCLUSIVE

Man Utd: Solskjaer says he’s not thinking about title race

Manchester United won’t be signing Roma striker Edin Dzeko on transfer deadline day, Express Sport understands. Reports in Italy had claimed earlier in the day that the Red Devils have made an approach for the 34-year-old. But, despite losing Odion Ighalo, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer won’t be swooping for the Bosnia international.

Despite United flying high in the Premier League, their strikers have misfired this season.

Ighalo toiled for the club during his final few months at Old Trafford, while Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial have failed to kick on.

United have relied on brilliance from Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes to spearhead their title challenge but, earlier today, reports in Italy claimed they’d approached Dzeko over a move.

However, Express Sport now understands that isn’t the case.

United aren’t in for Dzeko and won’t be signing the striker, who previously flourished in the Premier League at Manchester City – helping them win titles under Manuel Pellegrini and Roberto Mancini.

They are, however, committed to backing Solskjaer in the long run.

With the coronavirus crisis yet to die down, the club are continuing to come to terms with the financial repercussions.

It’s previously been reported they lose roughly £5million for every match played behind closed doors, with fans not allowed into Old Trafford since March.

United’s main focus is to back Solskjaer in the summer.

Erling Haaland is on the club’s radar, despite the Borussia Dortmund striker rejecting a move to England in January last year.

And Sevilla defender Jules Kounde has also emerged as a target, with Solskjaer believing the La Liga star can be the ideal long-term partner for Harry Maguire at the back.

United also believe January isn’t the ideal time to recruit.

Bruno Fernandes was an exception, with the club signing the Portugal international for £47million 12 months ago.

And Dzeko will now have to look elsewhere if he’s to secure a deadline day move away from Roma.

A swap deal with Inter Milan was mooted but that appears unlikely, with Antonio Conte happy with what he’s currently got at his disposal.

Solskjaer, meanwhile, recently expressed a belief that United wouldn’t strengthen today.

“Bar something surprising happening I don’t think anything will happen in terms of incomings, no,” said the 47-year-old.

“I would be surprised if we do any incomings.

“The squad is strong, it is full of quality. I still need to leave players out of the squad at times.”

The 47-year-old also ruled out a loan exit for Brandon Williams when speaking after his side’s 0-0 draw with Arsenal on Sunday.

“Brandon will stay,” Solskjaer said. “He played [for] the U23’s against Liverpool [on Saturday], he needed the match fitness.

“He has been working really hard. We don’t have any more players that we feel should be going. We need a strong squad.

“It’s a relentless season. We go again on Tuesday.

“It is like the NBA, we are on the road all the time. We need everyone. The group is tight.

“Brandon has been really good lately, working really hard the last few months and he will be ready when the chance comes.”
