Manchester United 'set to submit third offer of £55m for Mason Mount'
Take it or leave it! Man United ‘will submit third and final offer worth over £55m for Mason Mount’ with Erik ten Hag reluctant to overpay for the Chelsea star who has just 12 months remaining on his deal
Manchester United are expected to submit a ‘third and final bid’ of over £55 million for Chelsea’s Mason Mount.
It comes after their second bid of £45m plus £5m in add-ons was rejected by the Blues, who countered with a request for £60m plus £5m in bonuses.
According to reports in the Times, Erik ten Hag’s side feel Chelsea’s valuation is ‘too high’ for a player who will be out of contract next summer, and have accordingly offered less than the asking price.
They also claim that United are willing to ‘walk away’ from negotiations if their new deal is not accepted, with funds required elsewhere in the hunt for a new striker and goalkeeper.
Mount, who has played almost 200 games for the Blues, was named Chelsea’s player of the year in both the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons, but now looks unlikely to stay at the club beyond the summer.
He won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021, scoring twice against Porto and Real Madrid in the quarter-finals and notably teeing up Kai Havertz for the winner against Manchester City in the final.
Mount’s form this year has been hampered by injuries as he suffered an ankle injury in February, before undergoing surgery in April to over an abdominal problem.
Chelsea did enter talks with him over a new contract, but they broke down in February after failing to reach an agreement on wages.
Mount is one of several Blues midfielders who have been important players for the club but now look set to leave.
Man City have agreed a deal worth an initial £25 million for Mateo Kovacic, while Kai Havertz looks set to join Arsenal for £65 million.
While both players will be sizeable losses for Mauricio Pochettino next season, he will be buoyed by the confirmation of his first signing as manager.
