Manchester United senior figures want Anthony Martial sold at the end of the season, according to reports. The France international has scored just seven goals this term ahead of his side’s Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday. And a parting of the ways could be on the cards when the transfer window reopens at the end of the campaign.

Manchester United have seen Martial blow hot and cold over the years.

Signed from Monaco in 2015, he initially hit the ground running under Louis van Gaal by propelling the club to FA Cup glory.

Martial struggles under Jose Mourinho, though, with the current Tottenham boss lobbying for him to be sold behind the scenes.

That didn’t happen and, last season, the 25-year-old rewarded the club’s faith by scoring 23 goals across all competitions.

However, he’s since toiled with the France international only scoring seven goals so far this campaign.

And Eurosport say some senior figures at United want Martial to be sold when the transfer window reopens.

They’d be willing to consider ‘serious offers’ for the forward, who has fallen down Edinson Cavani in the Old Trafford pecking order.

Should he depart, it’s feasible United will go in for either Jadon Sancho or Erling Haaland.

Sancho was their top transfer target back in the summer but, in the end, Borussia Dortmund’s £108million asking price was deemed too steep.

United wanted to sign Haaland in January 2020 yet, on that occasion, were rejected for Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund instead.

In the time since, though, links to the Norway international have continued to arise.

And, speaking recently, Solskjaer fuelled speculation over a potential move by admitting he still kept in touch with the forward – who he previously managed at Molde.

The 48-year-old said: “It is clear that Erling is going to have a fantastic career.

“I follow Erling. I have always said that. Was it 18 months we had together or something like that?

“Almost two years, perhaps. A fantastic time. He will surely have a super career both for Norway and his club. He is doing incredibly well for Dortmund.

“We will see where he ends up. As a Norwegian and someone who has worked with him, it is of course great that he is doing so well.”

Former Newcastle and Southampton star Alan Shearer, meanwhile, feels Martial lacks four traits to become a world-class No 9.

He said: “I’ve read that Martial wants to be Manchester United’s main centre-forward and that he sees it as his position. I don’t.

“He’s been there for six years.

“Last season was his best in terms of numbers, but he’s never scored more than 20 league goals in a campaign and I just don’t see the desperation, the hunger, desire and know-how to be a No 9, to score as many goals as he should.

“I see the talent but that isn’t enough at a club that wants to challenge for the biggest honours.

“Martial is quite content to spend time outside the box, which is one of the reasons they signed Edinson Cavani and why, if fit, he’s ahead of Martial in their strongest XI.

“I realise that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team are top scorers in the Premier League this season, but I still think that if they had the scope to strengthen a couple of positions then one would be to add a top centre-forward.

“The other would be centre-half.

“Give them those and they can sustain a serious tilt at the title and the Champions League next season.”
