Manchester United have transfer interest in Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji, according to reports. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s interest in Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho is well-documented. But, now, a third player is in their sights.

Manchester United are currently second in the Premier League table and closing in on the Europa League trophy.

But Solskjaer, John Murtough and Darren Fletcher are already planning ahead to next season.

United are determined to improve their squad as they look to close the gap on Manchester City and know they need fresh faces if they’re to end their wait for a first Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

Haaland is their priority target, with Solskjaer sold on signing him at a time where Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood have struggled for consistency.

Sancho is also still on their radar, despite missing out on the England international back in the summer.

And, now, 90min claim United are interested in signing Akanji from Dortmund as well.

The 25-year-old has impressed at the Westfalenstadion, making 20 Bundesliga appearances over the course of the campaign.

And with United looking to sign a new centre-back this summer, a move to Old Trafford could be on the cards.

Akanji could be more attainable than Haaland or Sancho, with Dortmund determined to keep hold of both superstars this summer.

Yet with the coronavirus crisis impacting clubs around the world, the German giants may have no choice but to let their prized players depart.

Out of all three players, signing Haaland looks the trickiest deal.

Chelsea are also keen to sign the youngster, with Thomas Tuchel hunting a world-class upgrade on the likes of Tammy Abraham and Olivier Giroud.

With Manchester City primed to lose Sergio Aguero at the end of the campaign, Pep Guardiola’s side are also in the picture.

Barcelona would like to sign Haaland, too, though may struggle to meet the player’s demand due to their current financial situation.

And Real Madrid are also huge admirers. Kylian Mbappe, however, appears to be their priority target at the current moment in time.

Former United striker Michael Owen, meanwhile, has urged the club to all they can to ensure Haaland arrives at the Theatre of Dreams.

And though he thinks a new defender is needed, he reckons a new striker should be their priority instead.

When asked what the club need most, he said: “A top centre forward I think.

“I would like to see pace alongside Harry Maguire because then I think it changes the whole dynamic.

“If they could start defending one vs one, two vs two than that changes the whole dynamic of a team. I don’t think they can do that.

“They tried to do that against Tottenham earlier in the season and basically they’ve been scared stiff of committing bodies forward since.

“They tend to be a bit more pragmatic, they never tend to beat teams four or five-nil.

“But if I had one position though it would be a centre forward, right down the middle.

“There’s one on everyone’s lips at the minute which every team actually need.

“Haaland is the name in question and virtually every big team a the moment needs a centre forward. He is going to be hot property when and if he becomes available.”
