Manchester United must replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka with Kieran Trippier

‘He CAN’T defend’: Manchester United must replace Aaron Wan-Bissaka with Kieran Trippier because he ‘is not up to the quality’, claims Charlie Austin after facing the right back in QPR’s friendly win over the Red Devils last week

  • Charlie Austin believes Aaron Wan-Bissaka is not got enough for Man United
  • The QPR striker says the 23-year-old ‘can’t defend’ and must be replaced
  • Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is interested in a move for England star Kieran Trippier
  • United have welcomed Jadon Sancho and are close to signing Raphael Varane

Queens Park Rangers striker and talkSPORT pundit Charlie Austin has insisted Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the weak link in Manchester United’s defence and they must replace him with Kieran Trippier this summer.

Wan-Bissaka has been a regular on the right side of United’s defence ever since he moved to Old Trafford for around £45million from Crystal Palace in the summer of 2019.

He has largely impressed in his two seasons at the club, winning plaudits for his 1v1 defensive ability and athleticism to get up and down the pitch.

However Austin, who played against Wan-Bissaka in QPR’s 4-2 friendly win over United earlier this month, has told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that the 23-year-old is a defensive liability and must be replaced.

The striker, who has also played for Southampton, Burnley and West Brom during his career, also insists England star Trippier should be the man to replace him this summer.

Austin told talkSPORT on Wednesday morning: ‘Although Manchester United have signed [Raphael] Varane, their biggest problem is they need a right-back.

‘Aaron Wan-Bissaka is not up to the [required] quality.

‘We played them the other day, and I know it was only a pre-season, but they need to go all out for Kieran Trippier. That’s who they’re crying out for. Aaron Wan-Bissaka can’t defend.

‘And his final ball is not what a centre-forward wants, it’s not what [Edinson] Cavani wants, it’s not what [Marcus] Rashford wants. They need to sign Kieran Trippier.

‘You can always have a bad game, it was just a pre-season friendly. With all due respect, if Wan-Bissaka is your right-back, are Man Utd going to win Premier Leagues and silverware? I’m not too sure.

‘They need to strengthen there, definitely.’

Trippier has been heavily linked with a return to the Premier League this summer after two seasons in Spain with Atletico Madrid, in which he won the LaLiga title earlier this year.

He once again played a key role in England’s runners up finish at Euro 2020, making five appearance including three starts – one of which came in the final defeat to Italy.

United have already seen their attempts to sign Trippier rebuffed by Atletico earlier this summer – but the Old Trafford club remain interested in landing the defender ahead of the new campaign.

His arrival would be another big name addition to Solskjaer’s squad ahead of the new season, which Manchester United begin at home to Leeds on August 14.

United announced on Tuesday that a £42m deal for Raphael Varane to join from Real Madrid is almost complete.

The 28-year-old World Cup-winning centre back has long been one of United’s top targets. Varane’s contract at the Bernebeu was set to expire next summer, meaning United got him for a price well below what his market value would have been 12 months previously.

The Frenchman’s arrival adds to what is becoming a very fruitful transfer window for Solskjaer, having already bolstered their attacking options with the £73m signing of Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund. Goalkeeper Tom Heaton has also signed on a free transfer.
