Manchester United make £90m Jack Grealish transfer decision because of Paul Pogba
Man Utd: Pogba hones skills amid exit talk
Manchester United’s move for Jack Grealish will only go ahead in the summer transfer window but cannot be completed unless Paul Pogba is sold. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a huge fan of the Aston Villa captain but the Red Devils will need a sizeable bid to tempt Dean Smith into a sale.
United have a plan to sign Grealish in the summer but it will involve selling Pogba.
The Frenchman looks set to call time on his Old Trafford career when the season is up with his contract expiring in the summer of 2022.
It will mean the Red Devils will have to axe the World Cup winner or face losing him for nothing.
Rather than go down that painful road, the club are desperate to recoup the £89m they spent on him back in 2016.
According to The Atheltic, those funds will then be used to sign Grealish from Villa.
United were desperate to sign the playmaker last summer but were told they had to fork out £90m.
That proved too much and in the end, Grealish signed a new contract but there are reasons why the Red Devils are confident a deal can be pulled off this summer.
The Athletic further report that Villa and Grealish could come to a gentleman’s agreement to let him leave for a Champions League club at the end of the season.
It comes after another season where the 25-year-old is among Europe’s best creators, which have also earned him international reckoning with the England team.
Meanwhile, United legend Rio Ferdinand has told his former club to everything they can to sign the Birmingham-born star – even if it means canning Pogba.
“Good players will find a way, they will work it out,” Ferdinand told his FIVE YouTube channel.
“Can you imagine that team, if you had Scott McTominay holding, (Paul) Pogba alongside him, maybe a bit higher, Bruno (Fernandes) in the 10, Grealish on the left, (Marcus) Rashford up top and (Mason) Greenwood on the right? Imagine that, I’m licking my lips right now.”
“I don’t care if Pogba goes or not, Grealish is my man!”Ferdinand added.
“I’ve known this guy since he was in his early teens. He came to my restaurant in Manchester actually to watch a game and I got him some tickets.
“Great kid, great family. Loves his football. What you don’t see is the hard work behind closed doors, the attention to detail, the way he trains and changed his regime.
“He’s looked at himself and (asked) what can I do better? I’ve heard from a lot of people that’s he’s diligent with everything he does off the pitch to where he’s now.
“We’re seeing results week in, week out now.
“The numbers tell you he’s starting to think about things. I think he’s looked at himself in the summer and thought ‘I did well last season, I’ve signed a new deal at the club I love, and now I’m going to go again’.
“There’s been a huge improvement in the numbers.”
