Manchester United learn if Casemiro will be handed fourth suspension

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag reviews the Sevilla game

Manchester United and Casemiro suffered a woeful Thursday night in Spain as they crashed out of the Europa League quarter-finals to Sevilla. However, Erik ten Hag has been handed a consolation boost after the 3-0 defeat at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium.

Casemiro was among the several players who produced one of their most disappointing performances of the season back on Spanish turf.

The 31-year-old could only produce a 76 per cent pass accuracy and won just 50 per cent of his 10 duels against Sevilla.

He also failed to win any of his three attempted tackles and was dribbled past just as many times.

But Casemiro’s worst moment of the evening came in the 56th minute when Portuguese referee Artur Soares Dias booked him for a reckless challenge to halt a Sevilla break.

If United had overturned a then-two-goal deficit, the Brazilian midfield general would have missed the semi-final first leg against Juventus because it was his third booking in the competition.

The Serie A giants defeated Sporting CP 2-1 on aggregate in the last eight, setting up a potential Red Devils reunion for Paul Pogba.

But Ten Hag’s squad left Seville with their tails between their legs after their latest capitulation away from home.

There was understandable concern over whether Casemiro’s booking would carry over into the first game of next season’s European campaign.

However, whether United qualify for the Champions League through a top-four finish or remain in the Europa League, UEFA rules state the one-match suspension won’t carry over.

Casemiro has already missed eight games this season across three suspensions – a surprising factor of his first year in England after a spotless disciplinary record at Real Madrid.

In January, he received a one-match ban for a build-up of domestic yellow cards.

Casemiro then served a three-game ban for a straight red card in United’s 2-1 win over Crystal Palace after being adjudged to have grabbed Will Hughes by the throat.

Just a few games after his return, the £70million star received his second red card of the campaign for a crunching challenge on Carlos Alcaraz in a 0-0 draw against Southampton.

He was banned for four matches because it was his second offence, but he has escaped missing a ninth outing against Juventus with United’s exit.
