The World Cup winner is out of contract at the end of the season and the Italians are yet to offer him a new deal.

Giroud, 36, spent six years at Arsenal before joining rivals Chelsea. During his three years in west London, the Frenchman won three trophies, including the Champions League.

The forward’s defied expectations by continuing his form in Serie A and he has nine goals to his name in 19 matches so far this term.

Erik ten Hag is keen on signing a striker following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo last month.

‘I think we have a good team when all the players are available. But with many games coming up, I think there is a need,’ said Ten Hag last week.

‘But you need one who can have an impact, otherwise you are just burning money and you don’t strengthen the squad and it doesn’t help you.’

Giroud is therefore under consideration, given he would provide an aerial and physical threat that Anthony Martial could not.

The Times report that the Frenchman is a target but that Milan are likely to offer him fresh terms.

Giroud is out of contract at the end of the season and would consider a return to England if United offered him a longer deal than the likely 12-month deal Milan will offer.
