Manchester United football director John Murtough is yet to be told by the Glazers how much the club have to spend in this summer’s transfer market, according to reports. United are linked with a host of big-money signings following another trophyless season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho is again heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Sancho would likely cost around £77million after Dortmund lowered their asking price from last summer.

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is also on the club’s agenda as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer plots to strengthen at the back.

United are linked with signing a top striker such as Tottenham star Harry Kane and Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

However, speaking on Reach PLC’s Transfer Window podcast, Duncan Castles says United’s transfer committee, headed up by Murtough, do not know what the budget is to sign new players.

The much-maligned Glazer family, who have received unprecedented protest against their ownership in recent months, have yet to decide how much the club will be allowed to spend.

“The final determining factor, as always, is the Glazers,” Castles said.

“Interestingly I’m being briefed that the football committee, if you want to call it that, does not yet have a clear idea on budget.

“It will depend on what the Glazers approve. That probably comes down to PR perspective of what is seen to have to be spent to appease fans who are literally revolting against the Glazer ownership.”

United finished second in the Premier League last season, 12 points behind champions Manchester City.

The defeat to Villarreal in the final of the Europa League made it four years without a trophy for the Red Devils.

Speaking after that final defeat, manager Solskjaer insisted the club needed to bring in a few new players this summer.

“I’ve been delighted with the effort, the desire, the determination of all of the players, I can’t fault them at all,” Solskjaer said.

“We’ve probably done as well as anyone could imagine.

“We are here now, we need to do better, we need to work better, work harder, cleverer.

“But as I said two or three players to strengthen the starting XI and the squad all together is important for us to go even further.

“Because I’m sure our contenders or challengers will also want to improve and we want to improve as much as we can.”
