Manchester United and Donny van de Beek in agreement over Old Trafford transfer stance

Man Utd: Solskjaer assesses van de Beek performance

Manchester United signed Donny van de Beek back in the summer transfer window, paying £40million to sign the midfielder from Ajax. But with the Netherlands international struggling for minutes at Old Trafford, that’s led to talk of a move away. However, that doesn’t appear to be on the cards if recent reports are anything to go by.

Speaking ahead of United’s FA Cup showdown with Liverpool on Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed Van de Beek was far from happy.

“I wouldn’t say that Donny is happy. Of course, he wants to play more, but he gets about his job in the right manner,” he said.

“He reminds me a lot about myself, when I first came in, that he understands my difficulties and challenges.

“We are doing well and have got players who are playing really well in his position.

“I was the same with Sir Alex. When he left me out I understood and I was happy for the team to win – and Donny is that type of guy.

“He knows he is important for us and knows he is going to play many games.

“He will definitely be involved in this game against Liverpool and he might be the deciding factor in the game.

“He trusts his own quality. He is a quietly confident guy who deep down knows he is good enough and is just waiting for his opportunity.”

Inter Milan have been linked with Van de Beek in recent times, with the Serie A giants previously signing Ashley Young, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku from the Red Devils.

Real Madrid have too, especially with midfield maestros Toni Kroos and Luka Modric entering the twilight years of their careers.

However, it doesn’t seem as though Van de Beek will leave Old Trafford any time soon.

ESPN recently reported that United would rebuff any approaches for the 23-year-old, with Solskjaer keen to keep his squad together.

The Norwegian knows strength in depth will be vital if they’re to win the Premier League title for the first time since 2013, back when Sir Alex Ferguson ruled the roost.

And he’s also wary of a coronavirus outbreak, knowing his side would be depleted if many top players were to get struck down.

In addition to that, Van de Beek doesn’t want to go.

Dutch outlet Parool said earlier in the month the 23-year-old, while irked by his lack of game time, was happy with the club.

They said he doesn’t want to be seen as ‘giving up’ by securing a loan move away.

He is bored. But aren’t we all? Manchester, like everywhere else, has nothing open at present due to the United Kingdom’s nationwide lockdown.

And Van de Beek is happy living in a stress-free bubble with his girlfriend, Estelle Bergkamp.

United legend Edwin van der Sar, who managed Van de Beek’s affairs while the midfielder was at Ajax, believes his compatriot will come good at Old Trafford.

Van der Sar has claimed his compatriot still has the backing of the United hierarchy, despite Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reluctance to throw him into the firing line.

“I do talk to a lot of people at the club [Manchester United],” Van der Sar told Dutch broadcaster Ziggo Sport.

“Fantastic attitude, he does well in training.

“It [sealing a spot in the Manchester United midfield] is difficult.

“[Paul] Pogba is coming back, [Bruno] Fernandes is very important, [Nemanja] Matic and [Scott] McTominay, are also there.

“It’s no shame at all, it’s also a big club, isn’t it?

“Of course, it’s a large amount [Van de Beek’s transfer fee], but they are confident that he will get there.”
