Bruno Fernandes missed an injury-time penalty as Manchester United slumped to their first Premier League defeat of the season.

All the drama at Old Trafford happened in the closing stages when Kourtney Hause headed home Douglas Luiz’s corner after 88 minutes.

United had the chance to level in injury-time when Hause handled in the box but Fernandes – who took responsibility despite the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo – blazed over after the kick had been delayed by gamesmanship from Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

It marked Villa’s first win at Old Trafford since 2009 and the first time Ronaldo had failed to score since his return to United.

Solskjaer also lost two defenders Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire to injuries as Untied suffered their second consecutive scoring blank at home since February 2020.

It was a pulsating lunchtime game at a noisy stadium despite the lack of goals.

United had two dangerous free-kicks in the first half shared between their two Portuguese stars – but both Fernandes and Ronaldo hit the wall.

Emiliano Martinez saved from Mason Greenwood and his defenders put their bodies on the line with frequent blocks.

But Villa were dangerous on the counter particularly through Matty Cash who gave Luke Shaw a torrid time before the England left-back limped off injured after 34 minutes.

From one Cash cross, the other wing-back Matt Targett should have scored. A mix-up between Harry Maguire and David de Gea also let in Ollie Watkins with the goalkeeper making amends by saving with his foot.

Ronaldo was quiet and though the crowd loved the way he charged down Hause and blocked his clearance for a throw, that’s no really why United signed the multiple Ballon d’or winner.

It did help create a late United spurt before half-time however with Fernandes’ free-kick met by Maguire’s header which produced the best save of the opening 45 minutes by Martinez.

In the final action of the half, John McGinn clipped Pogba. The free-kick led to corner and from that Raphael Varane flicked on but somehow Pogba got his angles wrong on the far post and nodded wide.

Maguire received a painful kick down the back of his Achilles from Danny Ings at the start of the second period but temporarily soldiered on.

When McGinn was shoved over by Maguire as Villa attempted to break – and no free-kick was awarded – manager Dean Smith joined his Scottish midfielder in putting his hands on his head in disbelief.

Maguire then had his own sense of injustice when Konsa grabbed his shirt at a corner inside the Villa penalty area but referee Mike Dean again waved the appeals away.

For once Greenwood’s shooting boots weren’t on and he fired right at Martinez when having a run on goal after 65 minutes.

Roaming defender Matt Targett missed from close range with the away side enjoying the better of the first-half chances

Central defender Ezri Konsa missed another massive chance for Villa who simply couldn’t take the lead in the opening 45

Cristiano Ronaldo, returning to the XI, tried his luck with a free-kick but was unable to test goalkeeper Emi Martinez of Villa

In a further blow for United, England left-back Luke Shaw was booked and subsequently forced off through injury

As was club captain Harry Maguire, who had to be replaced by Victor Lindelof after struggling with an injury of his own

McGinn, steamed up by the earlier decision, could have no complaints when he kicked Fernandes up in the air and was booked.

Maguire was replaced by Victor Lindelof – Solskjaer’s second enforced substitution in defence – leaving him only one further change left for the final 20 minutes.

It was real end-to-end by now. Pogba lost the ball in the Villa half allowing the visitors to sweep up the pitch with Watkins testing De Gea.

Greenwood then tried to be over-intricate when he had Ronaldo available and dragged a shot wide. Pogba went on a mazy dribble before shooting rather tamely into Martinez’s raised gloves.

Dean Smith made sure to celebrate with the match-winner Hause, as Villa claimed their standout result of the season to date

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, meanwhile, consoled a highly disappointed Fernandes as Untied lost their first league game this season

United fans started chanting “Bring on Cavani” but first it was Villa who made a chance with Emiliano Buendia replacing Ings. Jacob Ramsey slipped at the wrong time when he could have finished United off and Solskjaer finally sent on Cavani with eight minutes left.

Yet Villa broke the deadlock when Hause, only playing because loanee Axel Tuanzebe was ineligible to face his parent club, headed in from six yards.

United’s lifeline came via the whistle of referee Mike Dean. Martinez tried to wind United up by goading them before returning to his goal to face Fernandes. In the end, he didn’t have to make the save with the spot-kick sailing into the Stretford End.
