Sterling joined City from Liverpool for £44m before enjoying a hugely successful seven seasons at the Etihad Stadium, leaving nine goals shy of reaching a century of Premier League strikes for the champions.

Pep Guardiola did not want to stand in the player’s way at the end of a campaign when he was often not selected on the biggest occasions.

Sterling follows Gabriel Jesus out of the door following the Brazilian’s £45m switch to Arsenal, while Chelsea believe they can also secure the signature of defender Nathan Ake.

Ake is keen on the move back to west London and is valued in a similar region to the other two big-name departures.

City moved swiftly to replenish their attacking options by landing Erling Haaland and Argentine forward Julian Alvarez, both of whom will be presented to supporters outside the Etihad later on Sunday.

The pair will be joined by Kalvin Phillips and goalkeeper Stefan Ortega at a fan event.
