Manchester United will finish second in the Premier League this season, their highest finish under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, with just one game remaining in the season, United will still be well behind league champions Manchester City, who currently sit 12 points above them.

As a result, the Red Devils face an important summer transfer window, with the club needing to make several signings in key positions if they are to challenge for the title next season.

According to a report from the Athletic, United are in the market for a striker, a winger, a holding midfielder and a centre-back to strengthen their starting XI.

A backup goalkeeper and a right-back to provide competition for Aaron Wan-Bissaka is also said to be on their shopping list.

Although Edinson Cavani has signed a one-year extension, Solskjaer has said that does not mean United will not bring in a new striker and the report states that Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane is being considered.

Kane is said to have been on United’s list since January and, with the player informing Tottenham of his desire to leave, a deal could be done.

City are also interested in the England captain, but they are considering other forward options, including Romelu Lukaku and Danny Ings.

Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho also remains firmly on United’s radar, with the report stating that the 21-year-old making the move to Old Trafford is ‘highly realistic’.

Dortmund have lowered their asking price and, although other clubs are expected to make a move, United are said to be ‘at the front of the queue’.

West Ham United star Declan Rice is noted as United’s ‘primary target’ in holding midfield, while Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane is also among their targets.

The France international is out of contract at the end of the season and Madrid could look to cash in on him this summer if he decides against signing a new deal.

Other centre-backs on their radar include Pau Torres and Jules Kounde.

It seems unlikely that both Dean Henderson and David de Gea will remain at the club next season and, with it looking like Henderson has displaced De Gea as first choice, United could cash in.

With Sergio Romero set to leave when his deal expires and a decision yet to be made on Lee Grant’s future, other options in goal are being explored with United in negotiations with Tom Heaton over a free transfer.

At right-back, Wan-Bissaka remains the main option and United are looking to bring in some competition for the 23-year-old.

Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier is named as the ‘leading candidate’, with United keen to sign an experienced option to support Wan-Bissaka.
