Manchester United are not thought to be exploring the option of signing Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez on transfer deadline day. The Red Devils were believed to be in the market for a midfielder to round off what has been a superb window at Old Trafford.

Saul could be on his way to the Premier League before the transfer window slams shut tonight.

But it doesn’t look as though it will be to Manchester United, who have taken their stance on bringing in a new midfielder this summer.

Atletico man Saul is also being strongly linked with a move to Chelsea.

And that could be his best bet of securing a move to the English top flight, with United not looking to bolster their options in the middle of the park.

That’s according to the Manchester Evening News, who report that unless there is serious movement later today, United will not be bringing in a new midfielder.

According to Goal, Atletico’s demands of an obligation buy for £34m is putting clubs off a loan move for Saul as things stand.

But as the clock ticks down on Tuesday, it remains to be seen if there will be any room for adjustment.

Rio Ferdinand believes that United are still missing a midfielder capable of dictating the play from deep, as Saul would possibly do, insisting that Fred is not that man, despite being tasked with the role against Wolves over the weekend.

“Fred, his attributes physically to be able to cover the ground and make tackles are really good,” he told his Vibe with FIVE YouTube channel.

“In that role, for me, you need someone who can orchestrate. Not only with the ball, I’m talking without the ball. He can position himself to stop trouble before it comes.

“A [Michael] Carrick, a [Sergio] Busquets, Fernandinho does it. People that can sit in their position.

“You haven’t got to fly everywhere at 100mph, but they’re in a position to stop the ball getting into these danger areas, they’re an obstacle.

“I don’t think he’s enough of an obstacle. He gets off the leash, goes and smells trouble and flies out sometimes, that’s not necessarily the best way to put out that situation.”
