Manchester United chief John Murtough is still hoping to make signings at right-back and central midfield before the transfer window slams shut. Jadon Sancho has already joined from Borussia Dortmund, while a deal in principle has been struck for Raphael Varane. So Express Sport will now take a look at their scary starting XI if Kieran Trippier and Saul Niguez also sign on the dotted line.

Goalkeeper: Henderson

Manchester United are determined to play more on the front foot next season.

And that means it’s Dean Henderson, instead of David De Gea, who looks likeliest to be their No 1.

The England international’s range of passing suits Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s planned playing style, allowing United to go on the attack from front to back.

De Gea may have to accept a place on the bench next term.

And that means Heaton will be there to provide competition or the pair, having returned from Aston Villa on a free transfer.

Defence: Trippier, Maguire, Varane, Shaw

United want to sign Trippier from Atletico Madrid.

They believe the England international’s offensive style can benefit their team, while also helping to galvanise Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

And, if United are able to bring Trippier to Old Trafford, then he’ll replace the former Crystal Palace star in the team.

The rest of their back four should pick itself.

Varane and Maguire will be deployed together at centre-back, with Luke Shaw then deployed in the left-back position ahead of Alex Telles.

Midfield: Saul, Pogba, Fernandes

It’s been revealed by Fabrizio Romano, speaking on The United Stand, that the Red Devils are eyeing Saul.

“Manchester United are among the clubs that have been in contact with Saúl Niguez’s agent – they have an interest in the player and consider him ‘one of the biggest opportunities on the market’,” he said.

“€40-45m will get a deal done, no bid yet.”

If Saul joins, he’ll likely walk into the team ahead of Fred and Scott McTominay.

And he’d offer Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba defensive protection, giving the pair license to roam.

Forwards: Sancho, Cavani, Rashford

When Marcus Rashford returns from injury, the United star will get his place on the left wing back.

However, Anthony Martial is expected to fill in while the England international has shoulder surgery – which is long overdue.

On the right wing, will be Sancho.

It’s an area the club have struggled in since Cristiano Ronaldo’s exit in 2009 but the former Borussia Dortmund star is seen as the solution after all these years.

And, down the middle, should be Edinson Cavani for the majority of matches after the Uruguay international decided to stay – having previously looked destined to join Boca Juniors.

Solskjaer reflects on Sancho and Varane deals

Speaking recently, Solskjaer admitted he was delighted at the arrivals of Sancho and Varane – believing the club are showing ‘ambition’.

“I’m very happy getting both our players in,” he said.

“First of all, the club has shown ambition with getting one of the most exciting young forwards in world football [Jadon Sancho], and one of the most respected centre-backs and one of the most winning centre-backs in the world.

“With him in, we’ve got different ways of playing of course, and I can see different ways of playing with Raphael.

“I can’t wait to get him in and hopefully we can get that sorted as soon as.”
