Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick has reignited the club’s interest in Ivan Perisic as he prepares to become a consultant for the club, according to reports. The Croatia international was previously wanted by Jose Mourinho during his time at Old Trafford. Yet Joel Glazer refused to sanction a move for the Inter Milan star back in the summer transfer window of 2017.

Manchester United are hoping to bolster their frontline when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

Cristiano Ronaldo could leave the club, with the 37-year-old unhappy at Old Trafford amid their wretched campaign.

United are unlikely to keep Edinson Cavani, too, with the 34-year-old eager to return to South America.

And uncertainty continues to surround the futures of Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood, too.

United tried to sign Perisic back in 2017, with Mourinho believing the Inter Milan winger would be the perfect partner in crime for Romelu Lukaku.

And Gazzetta dello Sport have today claimed that Rangnick’s United have reignited interest in the forward.

Perisic’s contract at Inter is due to expire in the summer and the Serie A giants want him to take a pay cut in order to stay at the San Siro.

The Croatia international’s representatives have already met with the Scudetto holders and both parties are apparently due to meet in the next fortnight.

Perisic currently earns in the region of £4.2million a year at present and Inter, given their financial situation, aren’t prepared to continue paying him that salary.

United, it’s claimed, ‘took an interest’ in the veteran.

But they didn’t ‘receive strong signals’ and appear unwilling to match the forward’s salary at the current moment in time.

Inter are hoping the winger, who helped his nation reach the World Cup final in 2018, stays on reduced terms.

However, it’s possible he’ll seek a new challenge having been at Inter ever since arriving from Wolfsburg in January 2015.

Perisic has been a big hit at Inter but did spend the 2019/2020 campaign on loan at German titans Bayern Munich.

There, he won the Bundesliga and also helped Bayern win the Champions League – coming off the bench in the 1-0 final victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

Speaking in November, meanwhile, Inter boss Simeone Inzaghi admitted he wanted Perisic to stay.

“As I also said in the case of Brozovic, I am fortunate to have a great club that knows what the manager is thinking,” Inzaghi said of Perisic.

“Ivan is doing incredibly well with his teammates.

“I have met him as an opponent many times and have always admired him.

“Now I have him in my squad, he is helping us a lot. The club knows how I feel, he must continue to work like this.”

Speaking in December 2018, months after he failed to join United, Perisic opened up on interest from the Premier League side.

“It’s true that an offer from Manchester United was on the table,” he said.

“I was really close to leaving Inter. When Luciano Spalletti arrived [in June 2017], he showed tremendous desire to keep me in the team and made it clear he didn’t want to lose me.

“That was very encouraging, and I haven’t regretted my decision to stay at Inter.

“In football, small details in these situations are key.”

Inter have negotiated deals with United for Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku and Ashley Young in recent years.
