Man Utd’s Mason Mount move questioned as Arsenal target Rice is ‘better fit’
Manchester United have been questioned by Jamie Carragher over their pursuit of Chelsea star Mason Mount. The Liverpool legend instead believes the Red Devils should be signing West Ham captain and Arsenal target Declan Rice.
Mount is strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer. He is widely reported to have agreed personal terms with United ahead of a potential switch.
A fee is yet to be agreed between United and Chelsea, with the Blues hoping to hold out for an £80million package. Mount has just a year remaining on his contract and United are looking to strike a deal at a lower price.
Mount is coming off the back of his least productive season in a Chelsea shirt. He struggled with injury throughout much of the second half of the campaign and has not been able to agree upon a new contract with his boyhood club.

Carragher doubts whether the England international would be the right signing for Erik ten Hag. He instead thinks his close friend Rice would fit better into Ten Hag’s formation.
Rice looks certain to leave West Ham this summer after leading the club to Europa Conference League glory last week. Arsenal are strong favourites to sign him and are said to be close to agreeing a fee.
United have held a long-standing interest in Rice and are still rumoured to be an admirer of the 24-year-old. Carragher has questioned why Ten Hag hasn’t pursued him harder.

He told the Metro: “Mason Mount is an upgrade on Eriksen in terms of where he plays. But going back to Declan Rice, United are one of the few teams at the top who don’t play 4-3-3, it’s usually two midfielders with Bruno Fernandes.
“Declan Rice and Mason Mount, they are very different players and it shouldn’t be one or the other but when you look at what Manchester United have got right now, I actually think Declan Rice would be a better fit for them. A lot more expensive of course.
“I do think he [Mount] is a good player and I like him, I wanted Liverpool to get him. Lots of coaches have picked him and like him. There is already a good player in there but Declan Rice would suit United more than Mason Mount in terms of how they set up.”
