Man Utd's Bruno Fernandes admits mental and physical struggles last season
Bruno Fernandes admits that he was suffering physically and mentally at the end of last season, but he is delighted to be back in Manchester United training and raring to go ahead of the new campaign.
The 26-year-old played an enormous 58 games for United last season, missing just one Premier League contest and making 15 appearances in Europe.
His form certainly dipped as the season came to a close and he struggled to recreate it for Portugal at the European Championships over the summer.
He admits that he was fatigued mentally and physically, however, he has enjoyed his holiday time after the Euros and is now back in training at Carrington and loving having the ball at his feet again.
‘It’s always nice to come back, you know, because you pass some time away from the club,’ Fernandes told PA as launch ambassador for RealFevr’s NFTs.
‘When you are at the club and when you arrive at the end of the season, you start thinking “oh, I’m tired, my head, I need to rest, I need to see the family”.’
Fernandes explained why it was so hard last season, as the break over the previous summer was so short due to the pandemic.
‘It was basically two seasons in one because of the Covid (situation) and everything,’ he said.
‘We have after the semi-final of the Europa League against Sevilla (in 2020) like five days to rest and come back again to start the new season, so basically it was everything in a row.
‘But it’s always good to be back, it’s always good to see the lads again and have the chance to train with them.
‘Of course as a player you want to be to be part of that, you want to be on the pitch training, having the chance to touch the ball. I’m really happy to be here.’
Fernandes could return to the field of play on Wednesday when Man Utd take on Brentford at Old Trafford in a friendly.
