Manchester United would win the Premier League if they sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and hired Thomas Tuchel. That is the opinion of Paul Merson, who believes Tuchel has already shown his world-class credentials during his nine months in charge of Chelsea.

Tuchel has made an exceptional start to life at Blues boss, securing them a top-four finish in the Premier League last season before winning the Champions League.

Chelsea have started the 2021/22 campaign impressively and sit top of the table after five matches.

They are unbeaten across all competitions and have kept five clean sheets in eight matches heading into Saturday’s crunch game against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge.

By contrast, United have been much less consistent, losing 2-1 to Young Boys in the Champions League and 1-0 to West Ham in the Carabao Cup.

Solskjaer is yet to find the formula for success this season, despite signing Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in the summer transfer window.

The Norwegian has been in charge of United since December 2018 and former Arsenal midfielder Merson is far from convinced he is the man for the job.

“If Thomas Tuchel was manager of Manchester United, they would win the league,” he wrote for the Daily Star.

“He is that good. And he can show it again when Chelsea take on Manchester City this weekend.”

Merson believes Tuchel’s recent in-game management against Tottenham shows he is a cut above Solskjaer as a boss.

With the half-time score at 0-0 against Tottenham, Tuchel made the decision to substitute Mason Mount for N’Golo Kante.

It proved a canny call, as Chelsea ran out 3-0 winners through goals from Kante, Thiago Silva and Antonio Rudiger in north London.

“Players have vision,” Merson added. “It’s the same with managers. They see games. Top players see a pass. Top managers see the game.

“Other managers just stick their best 11 players on the pitch and say: ‘Go and do what you want…’

“It was a big deal bringing Mount off. How many other managers would have been brave enough to do that?”

Tuchel will be hoping to further his reputation in Chelsea’s Premier League game against Man City on Saturday.

Having failed to win any of his first five matches against Pep Guardiola, Tuchel has now won each of the last three between Chelsea and Man City.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer will be aiming to bounce back from the midweek Carabao Cup defeat by West Ham when United take on Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
