Man Utd women’s boss sends clear message to Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe

Ten Hag gives Man Utd team news update ahead of facing Wolves

Manchester United Women boss Marc Skinner has insisted that his side would reap the rewards of greater investment from the Red Devils hierarchy as Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al Thani continue to battle it out in the race to complete a successful takeover. The two parties have been bidding to take control of United from the Glazer family over the last few months, with Ratcliffe’s proposal to buy 50 per cent of the club thought to be the frontrunner as things stand.

United were somewhat late to the party regarding the formation of their women’s team, which was only founded in 2018 and remains some way behind the likes of Chelsea in terms of dominating the English game at present. The Blues defeated United in front of Red Devils co-owner Avram Glazer in last weekend’s FA Cup final at Wembley and will claim their fourth Women’s Super League title in as many years if they manage to win their next three matches.

Skinner was left frustrated after the final whistle on Sunday but not with his United players as he sent a clear message to the club’s prospective new owners by underlining the importance of investing in their women’s side in order to start winning trophies at the highest level.

“The investment Chelsea have put in over years and years and years is a factor as to why they win, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that,” he told the Daily Mail.

“I feel we’re bridging gaps, even as we don’t spend their type of budget, but I think we’re bridging gaps and I think we can show a sustainable way of doing it. But look, we need to keep getting the best players and we need to keep being in the pool for the best players.

“The last two games will go a long way to helping us do that if we can get into the Champions League. This is the club that you want to come to if you’re top talent, this is the club that’s going places.”

United can book their place in next season’s Champions League group stages by taking just one point from their remaining two Women’s Super League matches, although they look set to miss out on the title unless Chelsea slip up over the coming weeks. The west Londoners have the added benefit of a game in hand over the Red Devils and have some of the world’s best players in their ranks, including Wembley match-winner Sam Kerr and a host of senior England internationals.

It remains to be seen whether United will ramp up their investment into their women’s team once the takeover process is complete, with Skinner’s side having pushed Chelsea all the way in the battle for Women’s Super League supremacy over the course of the current campaign. They have also recruited well over the last few years but could benefit from an extra injection of cash in order to establish themselves as a leading force at the top of the English game in the same way as Chelsea have over the coming seasons.
