Man Utd will lose millions on Greenwood as Getafe ‘contract clause’ emerges
Martinez steps up return but Rashford, Martial miss Man Utd training
Manchester United have formed a plan for Mason Greenwood, which involves the forward securing a permanent move next summer, according to reports. But the Red Devils are set to lose millions on their academy graduate due to a clause Getafe included in his season-long loan contract.
Getafe president Angel Corres has confirmed the club are weighing up an attempt to turn Greenwood’s loan into a permanent switch at the end of the season.
But, according to The Athletic, the La Liga outfit will receive 20 per cent of the profits if Greenwood moves elsewhere due to a sell-on clause inserted into his contract.
It means that if Getafe successfully keep the 22-year-old forward in Madrid, they would only pay 80 per cent of the transfer fee they agree with United.
The report adds that Getafe didn’t pay a loan fee to hand Greenwood an escape route on transfer deadline day and included the clause to retain value after helping him resume his career after a lengthy break.
United intend to oversee the former No 11’s rehabilitation in Spain this season before helping him seal a permanent transfer next summer rather than opening the door for his return.

Greenwood is under contract at Old Trafford until 2025, and the Red Devils have the option to extend it by a further year.
But United’s reportedly failed efforts to re-integrate him this year have made it clear that a parting of ways is the best outcome for all parties.
Recently departed chief executive Richard Arnold was said to have told club staff that the plan was for Greenwood to join Erik ten Hag’s squad at the start of the new campaign, following a six-month investigation.
However, that was met with internal and external backlash, prompting Arnold to make a swift U-turn and erase a video he reportedly filmed explaining his decision.

Greenwood hasn’t played for United since January 2022, shortly before he was arrested a later charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour – all of which he denied.
In February, the Crown Prosecution Service discontinued proceedings after a withdrawal of key witnesses, allowing the England international to resume his career.
He is still getting back up to speed at Getafe but has shown early signs of the promise he displayed under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ralf Rangnick, registering four goals and three assists in 13 appearances.
Greenwood will likely be playing his football away from M16 again next term, this time permanently, hitting United with a financial loss bound to sting some figures.
