Man Utd were ‘spooked’ by social media’s switch from Pochettino to Erik ten Hag

Manchester United were supposedly "spooked" by social media's sentiment change from Mauricio Pochettino to Erik ten Hag.

The PSG boss and Ajax head coach have been the frontrunners for the vacant managerial position at Old Trafford over the last few months. A decision on who to appoint appears to have now been reached, with Ten Hag reportedly getting the nod from the Red Devils board.

However, journalist Adam Crafton has suggested their decision was influenced by online opinion. "United were a little spooked by how particularly the online media space pivoted away from Mauricio Pochettino and became very, very enthusiastically in support of Erik ten Hag, and almost anointed him as this possible messiah," he told The Athletic Football Podcast.

A verbal agreement is said to be in place for Ten Hag to switch the Eredivisie for the Premier League come the end of the season. The Dutchman is expected to sign a deal which could stretch to four-years long.

Finishing touches still need to be applied with Ajax. Although it may be what the fans want, the decision might not be a popular one amongst the dressing room.

The Manchester Evening News claimed back in February that Pochettino was favoured by the majority of the United squad. He is the more experienced option and has 'impressed' several players with his career to date.

However, since that time the Argentine's PSG side have suffered an embarrassing Champions League defeat to Real Madrid, which did no favours for his public image.

Ten Hag will also likely be inheriting a very different squad to the one Ralf Rangnick currently oversees. Several stars are out of contract or looking for a move away this summer.

And the 52-year-old will no doubt want to put his own stamp on the team with a long-term project seemingly on the cards, leaving many at risk of being moved on.
