Man Utd weighing up releasing Ronaldo on free transfer after Tottenham walk-out

Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United nightmare might come to an end in the form of a free transfer after Erik ten Hag axed him from their first-team squad.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner reportedly refused to come on as a substitute in their win against Tottenham before a short club statement confirmed his fate.

The 37-year-old, who scored 24 goals on his return to Old Trafford last season, has made only two starts from 10 league games so far this season with his temper boiling over this week.

I News now report that an exit strategy is currently being considered, with United thinking about cutting their losses by letting Ronaldo leave on a free if no suitor can be found.

Super-agent Jorge Mendes may then be tasked with finding his client a new side, which could be a return to Sporting or even a move to MLS.

Ronaldo had been linked with moves to Manchester City and Bayern Munich before signing a two-year deal with United last summer.

United's Thursday statement said: " Cristiano Ronaldo will not be part of the Manchester United squad for this Saturday’s Premier League game against Chelsea.

"The rest of the squad is fully focused on preparing for that fixture."

Following the announcement, Ronaldo released a statement of his own where he admitted that things can happen in the 'heat of the moment'.

He wrote: "As I’ve always done throughout my career, I try to live and play respectfully towards my colleagues, my adversaries and my coaches. That hasn’t changed.

"Therefore, later on, I’ve always tried to set the example myself for the youngsters that grew in all the teams that I’ve represented.

"Unfortunately that’s not always possible and sometimes the heat of the moment get’s the best of us."
