Gary Neville is fearful Manchester United’s 3-0 demolition of Tottenham could cause them further problems when it comes to Donny van de Beek and Jadon Sancho’s playing time. The pair have had a rough ride so far at Old Trafford since arriving at the club from Ajax (£34million) and Borussia Dortmund (£72m) respectively and their chances of minutes may just have been dealt another blow after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer switched from his 4-2-3-1 to 3-5-2, a change that worked to devastating effect.

A rethink was needed in the aftermath of last weekend’s 5-0 horror show against Liverpool and Solskjaer showed his tactical nous to ease the pressure on his shoulders.

Seasoned veterans Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani were both on target and showed their class and chemistry throughout as they made their experience count against Spurs’ leaky defence.

Marcus Rashford also came off the bench to score as fellow forwards Mason Greenwood and Sancho were left on the bench with outcast Van de Beek, whose days at the club look numbered.

And despite detailing his pleasure at United’s response, Neville couldn’t help but show sympathy for Solskjaer’s two signings, who may just be wondering where their United careers go next.

“Do you know something, I can help but think about Van de Beek,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“Who’s put the name on him, who is sponsoring him at Manchester United, that kid who has sat in the stands and not kicked a football.

“Sancho if he’s not careful, is going to end up exactly the same.

“He’s played in some pretty appalling performances, not him, I mean team performances.

“He’s come into a club that’s looked totally disjointed in terms of their football, he’s played in a far better unit at Borussia Dortmund.

“He’s come in and is probably thinking ‘what the hell am I doing here, what is this, there’s no organisation or structure’

“He’s the only player if you look at Manchester United’s defensive running stats that is anywhere near.

“I think he’s fifth or sixth, he’s actually putting a shift in.

“He must be sitting on the bench thinking ‘what am I doing, I’m not going to play in this system.’

“Because I don’t see him in the two in midfield or the two up front, so he’s thinking where does my career go at Manchester United and Van de Beek is thinking the same.

“Today has been a good day but it does cause problems elsewhere.”
