Manchester United have supposedly expressed an interest in signing Tariq Lamptey from Brighton – but are ‘£10million short’ in their valuation. Ralf Rangnick is taking charge of his first – and potentially last – transfer window as United boss this month with a replacement expected to take over in the summer.

After a disappointing first half of the season, United are expected to make some changes this month.

A central midfielder remains the top target with continued uncertainty on the pairing of Fred and Scott McTominay.

While the pair have impressed on occasions, with McTominay scoring the winner against Aston Villa last time out, they’ve been outplayed by rivals in midfield on several occasions.

But there are also concerns on United’s options at right-back with Aaron Wan-Bissaka falling behind Diogo Dalot in the pecking order.

The former Crystal Palace defender was signed for £50million nearly three years ago, but he’s failed to impress at Old Trafford going forward.

And while Dalot is currently the favoured option under Rangnick, the Portuguese full-back has struggled when called upon defensively.

A new right-back may be signed this month, according to the Daily Mail, and Lamptey appears to be the top target.

The 21-year-old has earned rave reviews since leaving Chelsea for the south coast in 2020.

DON’T MISS

It is claimed that Rangnick has personally intervened with a request to the board to sign an ‘upgrade’ on Wan-Bissaka and Dalot.

Lamptey appears to be his favoured option with United reportedly valuing the defender at £30m.

But it is claimed that valuation falls £10m short of what Brighton would seek in a potential transfer.

Tottenham have also been linked with Lamptey, but Antonio Conte appears to favour a move for Adama Traore this window.

Brighton are under no pressure to sell Lamptey as his contract doesn’t expire until 2025.

And the Seagulls are just four points adrift of United in the table with Graham Potter’s side impressing at the midway point of the campaign.

Since returning from a long-term injury, Lamptey has struggled to hold down a regular place in the starting line-up.

Potter has chopped and changed between Lamptey and Joel Veltman at right back, but the Brighton boss doesn’t expect the former to leave in the January transfer window.

“No, I would expect all our players to be with us,” he said.

“There is a lot of speculation out there. There is nothing to report. The fact that there is speculation shows we are doing quite well.”
