Paul Merson does not see a problem in Manchester United selling Cristiano Ronaldo to Chelsea by claiming Newcastle pose a bigger threat to their season. The former Arsenal midfielder is adamant the Red Devils should look to move the 37-year-old Portuguese veteran on – even if it means selling to the Blues.
Ronaldo has made it crystal clear he wants to depart Old Trafford in search of Champions League football.
Yet all avenues have seemingly been exhausted after Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Napoli all turned down the chance to sign CR7.
With the Blues still scanning the market for a new centre-forward, Chelsea continue to be linked with a swoop for Ronaldo following Todd Boehly’s meeting with Jorge Mendes in Lisbon.
When quizzed on whether United should sell to a direct rival, Sky Sports pundit Merson made it clear there is a huge gulf between United and Chelsea – suggesting Newcastle are more of an active threat.
He said: “Why is it their rival? They’re not top-four Man Utd – they’re a million miles off.
“They’ve got to be making sure they don’t sell to Newcastle.
“I’m not being horrible but at the moment they’re a million miles behind.
“Don’t worry about the top four at the moment, worry about the club.
“They’ve got to start walking again. Don’t start sprinting and looking at the top four.
“There are ways of losing football matches but don’t lose 4-0 to Brentford. That’s no disrespect to Brentford.”

Merson, who is a self-confessed Chelsea fan, cannot believe Thomas Tuchel is yet to move for Ronaldo given his availability.
The Blues need a penalty-box striker capable of scoring goals and in a saturated market, Ronaldo stands out.
He added: “I cannot believe they didn’t or haven’t gone in for Cristiano Ronaldo. He just ticks all of the boxes Chelsea are lacking.
“Playing for Chelsea is not like playing for Manchester United, who are working from the halfway line. Chelsea are on the edge of the box, dominating games.
“Chelsea have unbelievable wing-backs, they dominate football matches, if they were putting the ball into the box for Ronaldo I would dread to think how many goals he could score.”
