Manchester United players could stop trusting goalkeeper Andre Onana, according to club hero Peter Schmeichel. The Cameroon international made another howler against Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday as he failed to keep out Mathias Jensen’s weak effort, despite getting his whole hand to the ball. And Onana’s error nearly cost United dearly as the Red Devils were behind until the 93rd minute, with substitute Scott McTominay ultimately popping up with a quickfire brace at the death to spare his side’s blushes.

United shelled out £47million to sign Onana from Inter Milan in the summer after the club allowed David de Gea to depart for free at the end of his contract. But the new keeper has endured an atrocious start to his Old Trafford career and has cost his side a number of goals because of personal errors.

“Now he’s upset the whole team,” Schmeichel told Premier League Productions following United’s clash against the Bees. “Now they will even more not trust him, and my God, it’s not good.”

The Red Devils have looked dismal at the back since the campaign got underway and have already conceded 12 goals in the Premier League and seven goals in the Champions League. And Schmeichel took aim at the man between the posts as he assessed Jensen’s goal.

“The goalkeeper is not covering himself in glory in that one,” the Dane explained. “My theory here is he’s just lifting up, he’s not setting off, his arm is coming up to go down, whereas as a goalkeeper you learn to dive along the ground for the ball, you don’t go up to come down.

“We saw the same mistake against Bayern Munich and I notice the same thing, he just kind of lifts himself instead of actually diving and moving towards the ball. Don’t ask me because I’m not Onana, I don’t know. It’s a technical [issue].

“I think a lot of that is pressure. I spoke to him after Bayern, I spoke to him after the other Champions League match against Galatasaray as well, he’s very down on the mistakes he’s made. I’m trying to speak to him about what it’s like to be at Manchester United, what you have to take.

“Whatever you’ve made, you have to put it in a box straight away and put it to the side. So you make a mistake in a game, it might be a mistake we see, it might be a mistake that we don’t see, but you wait to think about it and analyse it until after the game or at night or whatever. You have to be there for the next moment, if you’re not you’ll make the next mistake.”
