Manchester United football director John Murtough looks set to have a busy first transfer window in charge if reports are to be believed. Murtough is heading up United’s new recruitment process after being appointed into his new role last week. He will work alongside manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and new technical director Darren Fletcher in helping to bring players to Old Trafford.

United have seen improvement on the pitch under Solskjaer this season.

The Red Devils sit second in the Premier League table and are in the latter stages of both the FA Cup and Europa League.

However, Solskjaer is still searching for his first trophy and saw his side lose in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.

And it appears the club, spearheaded by Murtough, are hoping to add major additions to the squad this summer.

Ian McGarry of the Transfer Window podcast says Solskjaer has identified four positions he wants to strengthen.

“We know that he has identified four positions,” McGarry said.

“A striker, and by that I mean a No 9, someone who can play at the top of the team with three attacking midfielders.

“And also a defensive midfielder, a centre-back to partner Harry Maguire, and also a back-up right-back to Aaron Wan-Bissaka.”

McGarry’s colleague Duncan Castles went one further and said United are also in the market for a goalkeeper, taking their list of targets to five.

Castles responded: “Those targets, you also have the goalkeeper they’re looking at and the possibility of trying to move David de Gea out, and in discussions with Gianluigi Donnarumma about coming as a free agent.

“Looking at a striker, obviously Solskjaer’s preferred candidate for that is Erling Haaland.

“There is a kind of flow towards that because [Edinson] Cavani is on a very expensive salary, so retaining him is not the cheapest of options.

“A central midfielder, I’m told they’re looking for a player who can play as a No 6 as a holding midfielder, or as a No 8, to play both positions and give them more options in midfield.

“Back-up right-back and another centre-back [as well].”

AC Milan’s Donnarrumma and Borussia Dortmund’s Haaland are two reportedly on the radar of United.

Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane and Sevilla’s Jules Kounde are being eyed as potential solutions in the centre of defence.
