The immediate future of Villarreal and Spain defender Pau Torres will be decided after the conclusion of Euro 2020, according to reports. The 24-year-old has been heavily linked with Manchester United for a number of months, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer eyeing the addition of a new centre-back to partner Harry Maguire next season.

The Red Devils have been widely tipped to land Raphael Varane this summer with the Real Madrid stalwart out of contract at the end of next summer.

United’s transfer priority has reportedly switched to the capture of a top-class defender since the imminent arrival of Jadon Sancho was officially confirmed on Thursday.

Although Varane is a long-term target and could be poised to join United over the coming months, recent reports have suggested that a move for Torres is not out of the question.

Villarreal’s star man, who is currently representing Spain at the Euros, is said to have a release clause of £55million written into his contract.

If United are inclined to act on their desire to land Torres this summer, it seems as though any hopes of a move will need to be shelved until the end of the tournament.

The defender is not prepared to contemplate his future during the Euros but is planning to make a decision after all has been said and done on the international stage, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

Spain booked a semi-final meeting with Italy on Friday evening with a penalty shoot-out win over Switzerland, the side that knocked defending world champions France out of the competition just four days earlier.

Torres has played in every game for his country so far and will need to find his best form for the all-important match at Wembley against the Azzurri, who are enjoying an unbeaten run that stretches all the way back to 2018.

Romano explained the Villarreal defender’s transfer situation via his Twitch account, confirming United’s interest but stressing that any approach for his services will be forced to wait.

He also suggested that a number of other clubs could look to nip in front of the Red Devils and secure his signature ahead of next season.

“After the Euros, Pau Torres will decide about his future,” said Romano.

“Keep an eye on Manchester United because Pau Torres has always been on the list. He has a release clause of €65m with Villarreal.

“Spanish clubs are also looking for centre-backs, Barcelona, Real Madrid. If Manchester City sell Laporte, maybe they will think about signing a new centre-back.”

Torres made 44 appearances in all competitions for Villarreal last season, popping up with three goals and two assists in the process.

He played a crucial role in the club’s recent Europa League triumph, delivering a strong performance in the final against United and scoring past David de Gea in the decisive penalty shoot-out.

It remains to be seen whether the 20-time Premier League champions will pursue a move for Torres or go all out to land Varane this summer.

United have also been linked with the likes of Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and Brighton and Hove Albion’s Ben White, who is said to be close to joining Arsenal, since the turn of the year.
