Manchester United target Julian Alvarez has been linked with Europe’s top sides over the past six months, including the Red Devils, as he looks to find his way to European shores. But an old interview has cropped up after United’s reported interest – with the River Plate striker claiming he plays as arch-rivals Manchester City on the popular video game FIFA.

Alvarez, 21, made his professional debut at the age of just 18, scoring his first goal just months later and helping River win the Copa Libertadores and Copa Argentina in his first season.

It took the prodigy until the current season to make his real breakthrough, having scored 20 goals in just 35 league games for Los Millionarios as they won the Argentine Premier Division.

Dubbed the best player in Argentina, Alvarez won the top goalscorer award as River romped to the title.

This perked the interests of United and City amongst others, with many keen to secure his signature.

But in an old interview, it has awkwardly surfaced that he likes to play as United’s rivals City when on FIFA.

“Playing in Europe is most people’s dream because of those leagues’ quality and what it means to be at those clubs,” he told Radio La Red in October 2020.

“But I am taking it easy. Obviously I talk to my agent and my family, but I know I have to stay focused on what I’m doing.

“Later the time will come, through the work I am doing.”

Alvarez then seemingly gave a hint over the two Manchester clubs he would prefer to join.

He said: “On the Playstation I play with Barcelona or Manchester City.”

River’s season does not start until May 22, giving them plenty of time to source a replacement albeit for their star striker.

A potential fee has yet to be touted, although it is believed River have a £17million release clause on Alvarez’s contract.

Reports on Sunday suggested that his agent was en route to Manchester for talks with several clubs, including United, Barcelona, Real Madrid and more.

Alvarez has five caps for his country after making his debut in 2021.

And he will be hoping he can follow in the footsteps of Sergio Aguero, Hernan Crespo and Diego Maradona in his European exploits.
