Manchester United’s new director of football John Murtough will launch a bid for Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman if he fails to sign Jadon Sancho, according to reports.
Borussia Dortmund attacker Sancho is United’s primary transfer target this summer with boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer planning a Premier League title bid ahead of next season.
The Red Devils finished second in the top-flight but trailed rivals Manchester City by 12 points.
Pep Guardiola’s side have won the league in three of the last four campaigns and Solskjaer is keen to end their dominance.
United’s Europa League final defeat by Villarreal was further evidence that they still amble behind most of Europe’s elite.
The Norwegian coach wants at least three signings made in key areas during the transfer window.

A centre-back partner for Harry Maguire is a necessity. The England defender’s ankle injury towards the end of the season highlighted United’s defensive weaknesses.
Solskjaer is also believed to want a central midfielder and a winger.
The latter addition would complete a devastating front four alongside Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rahsford and either Edinson Cavani or Antony Martial.
United reportedly believe that they are close to signing Sancho in a £75million deal.

However, Murtough, who was appointed to his role in March, has been looking at alternatives in case United’s final differences with Dortmund prove too difficult to compromise on.
One of those targets is Bayern wide man Coman, according to Sky Germany.
The report suggests that Coman wants to leave the Bundesliga champions because he is unhappy with their latest contract offer.
His current deal ends in 2023.
Coman scored five times in 29 Bundesliga appearances as Bayern won their ninth consecutive title.
In total, he has 41 goals and 50 assists in 200 appearances for the Bavarians.
Solskjaer expects his squad to be improved over the next few months as he plots United’s first league title since 2013.
“Of course, we’re planning as we normally do, that’s an ongoing process,” Solskjaer said after his side ended the season by beating Wolves 2-1.
“We’re looking at the squad and I hope we’re going to strengthen with two or three players we definitely need to challenge higher up in the table.
“We’re still too far behind to think it’s just going to come by itself.
“We’ve had a few players on loan that might come back in. There is interest in a few others going out. You want to come out of the transfer window strengthened.
“It’s difficult to say, I can’t see too many outgoings.”
